MICROSOFT officially announced DirectX 11 during its Volish Gamefest 2008 developer conference in Seattle, Washington.
The latest Microsoft multimedia API package will include improved multi-threading capabilities, hardware-based tesselation and new shader technology that re-positions GPUs as general-purpose parallel processors [cough!].
Microsoft CTO Chris Satchell explained that the company wanted “to break away from purely having a paradigm of pixels, vertices and shaders."
The Vole has also graciously decided not to force users to purchase DX11-specific hardware. Satchell readily admitted that Microsoft had deliberately created a discontinuity between DX10 and DX9, but emphasized that "DX11 is totally compatible with DX10.” µ
"DX11 is totally compatible with DX10.”

Oh wow, they are still assholes. 'Sure we won't force DX11 on u like we did 10...but wait u WILL NEED 10! MWUAHAHAHA'

Wtf is going on with marketing these days? It feels so dumbed down, even a monkey can firgure it out, i hope microcrap burns to the ground, all their products suck, all their services too... (and yes i use windows xp)

What happened to DX10.1? or has it been decided by those higher than mortals that if the green team can't do it, lets forget it?

10.1 hardware compatible with 11? (silly question, but I've learnt not to assume).

"Satchell readily admitted that Microsoft had deliberately created a discontinuity between DX10 and DX9" it would of been kinda hard for him to have said anything else wouldnt it ?? lol O_o

DX11, DX12, DX1XXXXXXXX, does it really matter, theres sod all coded for DX10 never mind about DX11 et-al, so bring it on lol.

they need to be incorporating that non event PhysX in DX, im getting well peed off with installing game demos that install silently 100+ meg of Ageia carp that opens ports back to base camp without asking permissions grrrrrrrr, i thought that sort of stealth was the sole territory of M$ !!

"technology that re-positions GPUs as general-purpose parallel processors" whats that about ?? wait, itll be to do with that 'folding at home' nonsense that puts ya lecky bill in the supertax bracket, clogs up the net and destroys the ozone layer due to the extra lecky that has to be generated to run legacy socket 'A' 'folding at home' farms 24/7 by misguided peeps thinking they're doing their 'bit' for mankind/womankind/personkind/peepskind (need to be politically correct, PUKE :O) ), peepskind would be far better off if we all chipped in (pun intended) a few beer tokens apiece to buy stanford a 'super kray' that can efficiently number crunch and get the job done in a fraction of the time and heat/air condition stanfords campus to boot with the recycled heat generated by said Kray !!!

/rant over, im going for a lie down now in a darkened room lol :O)
Does this mean that a DX10.1 card will be fine for DX11? I just bought an HD 4850 card. I didn't get the HD 4870 because DX11 was around the corner. I should have bought the 4870? Sigh...
Please don't start the static that it's only Vista (MEII) and newer, thats obvious. I want to know if DX11 will run Server 2008. And to throw a rock - how about making DX11 opensause! lol (ya know, since it's gonna be required for those uber new games. Like dotx is :) now.
So DX11 is compatible with DX10 hardware ? How nice of you to not try to screw us over yet again, Ballmer.
No really, I very much appreciate that, in order to have DX11-compatible stuff, I won't have to go and replace all that DX10-compatible hardware I would have had to buy if I had wanted Vista.
My graphics card is DX10-compatible, so the one question I have is this :

Will DX11 be XP SP2 compatible ?

Because if it isn't, screw you Microsoft.
Yes, DX10.1 will be required.

"On another note, hardware vendors will need to support both DirectX 10 and DirectX 10.1 in order to support for DirectX 11, so the boys in green will have to support D3D10.1 at some point down the line."

Does Microsoft have a death wish?

DirectX 11? Whuh? Does anyone even use DirectX 10 (or 10.1 - or whatever letter sub-revision we're into now)?

Honestly, We've already had one edition of Windows too far, that no one wanted and few willingly use - Vista. And soon we'll have Vista II aka Windows 7, which Microsoft have already said is a warmed over Vista - bound to please everyone who vowed never to have Vista on their PC.

Now DirectX11. 10.1 wasn't enough? Too many people were skipping 10/10.1 so we need DX11 to give all those folks sitting at DX9.0c a reason to spend $200 on a new video card and $200 on a new Windows?

Yeah, right. I can see the queue of punters lining up around the block now to fork over their $400 for another pile of useless crap from Microsoft. They may as well buy an Xbox 360 - oh, wait....
I could switch to Linux and be done with the upgrade treadmill.

I hate upgrading my entire operating system just to play a fancy new game.
I thought this was surprisingly generous on their part, given how things usually go. Anyhow DX10 is old news by now, and I have a feeling that people might have still been sour about the whole xp/vista DX 10 issue. By coming out all perky and optimistic about DX 11, they can at least recapture some of the enthusiasts.
Until we see "runs on Windows XP" as a DX10+ feature, nobody cares.
DX11 as a software API is upward compatible with DX10 and DX10.1, making the transition for game developers much easier than DX9 to DX10. Also, there won't be a forced update to Win7 to run DX11 games like there was to Vista for DX10.

DX10.1 was a minor upgrade to DX10 to reduce specific performance pain points for certain techniques. These are all available in DX11. Unfortunately Nvidia didn't support DX10.1 (ATI did), so game developers didn't get the benefit of ubiquitous hardware and didn't much use the enhancements.

I'm not sure why Aharon Etengoff "[cough!]"s at using GPUs as general-purpose parallel processors. The newer hardware really is a super-computer on a card. For those algorithms that benefit from the massive batch parallelism offered we can get order of magnitude performance boosts.
In case you've forgotten, paradigm shift means complete new departure from past levels of quality. Thats D3D. New Direct 3D enviorment. People cry Y BUY, yet article clearly States:not to force users to purchase DX11-specific hardware.

I mentioned earlier why 10 at all, meaning use 10.1 + 11 & seems that way.

Its Updater & Good One at That. Since selling Music & Movies is bit of Fantasy, this is much better improvement than previous two combined. Now lets See DX 11 in X2 Gpu in Crossfire & have real Square Machine.

DX10? DX11? BAAAAH!!!!

None of the games I play require DX10 because they are all DX9c games. Anyone who reads hardware reviews knows that, unless you own an Alienware or other expensive PC with an expensive high end video card, you're not playing any DX10 games with any decent frame rates. Since I haven't won the lottery yet, I won't be concerning myself with the two DX10 games that exist, one of which can be played in DX9 mode (Crysis). I'm not wasting time or money on DX10 or DX11.
So Microsoft is introducing easier way to program your GPU to do paralell processing. I guess that takes the wind out of the sails for NVidia.
Party on dude!

I was of the same opinion and that Vista was a total waste of space.......
Now two months into my non dual boot and Vista only machine I could not be more wrong, Vista is superior to XP on many levels.

DX11 you say, great bring it on.
If the API is faster than DX 10 awesome! Works on my DX10 hardware - even better.

Sob my Windows 98 does not have support for a product made years after the fact. Now XP....

At least they have given a level of performance before you even try to run the latest direct X API.

Otherwise you whiners would be complaining that you low end hardware does not work well with it.

This is progress keep your heads in the sand you belong there,

Rock on Vista no need to reinstall this puppy every 6months but then again you geeks love that eh?
Microsoft and all Game Developers take Note! Any product or API requiring Vista is DOA. I am in your target audience, I buy games. I currently subscribe to 2 MMORPGs. I am the go to Guy in my Gaming Guild for technical advice and support.

Just to make it extremely clear, Vista Only, not interested. DRM your product? not interested. I have already converted every system in my home and business to Ubuntu, except for a single gaming PC running XP pro. The only way I would buy a DX11 product is if DX11 runs on XP (Or the unlikely prospect that windows 7 is actually an improvement on XP).

You want to make actual gamers happy, dump DX altogether for openGL, and start releasing your products on Linux.
Microsoft know for wealth business but they use be great windows now they hide their embarrassment by announce pride about how many sold on Vista which is (cough) bull. (sight) I felt that they just experiment us like a lab rat to use their program to see if work perfect and cost us a lot of money. Which I do not understand why they sell cheap until it get fix right. Now they move on to DX 11 from 10. What a waste. Lucky you, they still replace for you from DX 10. I have to wait for stable one to use so I can enjoy game better. Amen!

"Satchell readily admitted that Microsoft had deliberately created a discontinuity between DX10 and DX9"

This is what killed your Vista launch.
My ATI 2600 HD card supports hardware-based tesselation, i wonder if the DX11 version of this feature can be accelerated by it?
err, DX10 runs fine on xp guys.

Thanks to the green team not being able to do memory virtualisation (and thus it was removed from DX10 as a hardware requirement).

Know it isn't supported, but I've seen machines with it running.

Now if only I could find a link on a popular search engine.

DX11 from what I understand is going to be vista only as it forces this memory virtualisation (10.1 anyone?) XP can't handle it.
I have been waiting for DX11 for years. In the 90's MS promised all sorts of 3D, and eventually that was remolded into DX. In the early 00's ExtremeTech (I think) published the way ahead up to DX 11, or 12 (I forget). The delays have been intolerable (not too mention Intel worlds first DX10 chip, integrated never the less, that came without DX10 and fizzled, as usual) I think we are much behind the schedule and DVX was pushed and extended into the DX9 path. Back then ray tracing and general purpose computing were on the drawing board for DX 10 or DX11.

However, DX9 was never meant to be the end of it, and DX had undesirable garbage along the way. So, with hindsight, they appeared to have reformed DX to get it back on stream. Lets hope they have done it right and DX12 remains on the same stream (if DX12 exists, as I think original DX12 features might have been moved back to 11, and some 11 features to 10).
...you are talking about. DirectX 10 required new hardware because it required that the firmware on the cards support more optimized code with more features. So from DirectX9 to 10, there was a required hardware upgrade. However, I take it that DirectX10 set the foundation for the code to allow DirectX11 to only require software and/or firmware updates. SO the new features in 11 will not require new hardware. That's it for those of you who don't understand.
@ Hello above, save your typing...these tools aren't worth explaining to.
direct x 11 is gonna be for windows 7 only like direct x 10 was for windows vista so direct 11 wont work on xp or vista only windows 7
I'm so sick of hearing people complain about Vista and having to buy new hardware for new software like directx 11 but think about what would happen if you didn't have to upgrade things. Noone would buy new hardware so manufacturers would get hardly any business and technology wouldn't advance and you would be stuck with 20 year old hardware playing stupid black and white 2d games on a slow computer. If you stop complaining and spend money on new advances you will get updates and better hardware and faster and smaller computers that look better and do more things. Also I think Vista and 7 are great and way better than XP and DX11 will probably be way better than DX9.
DX11 from DX9 is so similar a revision which could be done and should be done on XP.
wake up to this scam.
