Mary Rose Ebay cannon balls were fakes

Receiver of Wreck seizes 14 balls
Tue Dec 21 2004, 14:23
THE RECEIVER OF WRECK said that someone attempting to sell cannon balls on Ebay from King Henry VIII's warship, the Mary Rose were fakes.

The ship was Henry's pride and joy, and he watched it sink with the loss of all hands in the Solent, perhaps with all 600 crew entering Davy Jones' Locker.

The Receiver of Wreck said it, with the cooperation of Ebay and cops from Hampshire's marine unit confiscated 14 cannon balls from the vendor.

Remains from the Mary Rose and other official wrecks are subject to confiscate remains and prosecute those who try and sell them.

After the balls were closely examined, the authorities said they were 18th or 19th century shot, although the exact origin is still unclear.

Items sold on Ebay that purport to be from the Mary Rose are likely to be either fakes or illegally acquired. µ
