The Java program is free to download to any Java-enabled handset. While it was possible before to access gmail through your mobile, the new application improves on the last build and allows users to access their mail quickly through the application, rather than having to open a mobile browser to point at the Gmail site.
Users will be able to call email senders at the touch of a button, and includes the Gmail staples like threading and search. The new program also allows users to check out attachments in a mobile-specific full screen format.
Product manager for Google Mobile Tony Hsieh told CNET that, in his experience, if it takes someone over a minute or two to check email on their phones, they most likely won't do it: "It can take 11 clicks to delete or archive a message, but with the new application it will take just two."
While the program itself is free, data charges of course will still have to be paid to network providers. Users can get a hold of the app by pointing mobile browsers here. µ
