Dell slammed for poor dual Xeon performance

48 machines might go back
Sat Jul 26 2003, 12:51
A MESSAGE IN a beowulf.org thread claims that Dell's dual Xeon 1600 SC is a poor performer.

And the person who filed the complaint appears to be contemplating sending the 48 dual Xeon systems back to the firm.

The man said that while his organisation was performing benchmarks to test the cluster, he discovered some "very bad" performance problems with the internal Gigabit card, based on the 82450EM chipset.

But when a PCI-X 82540 card was installed, the results turned out ever so much better.

Stephane Martin, in a subsequent thread, said that the tests showed that "Dell missed something" integrating the 82540EM in the 1600SC series. His $150,000 cluster needs to be connected and if Dell won't solve the problem soon, the 48 machines are going back. ยต
