RTX HAS ANNOUNCED the DUALphone 3088, a phone capable of regular calls as well as dialling via Skype, without the need for a PC.

The phone, available here for around €160, will let users choose whether they fancy calling a regular landline connection or calling using the Internet - you will also be able to call Skype users for free at their Skype accounts.

Of course, though a PC isn't required, an internet connection definitely is and broadband is recommended. Then again, if you're on 56K, you probably closed this window waiting for the INQ logo to appear.

RTX boasts that the phone has a colour display and operating time of over 10 hours of talk time, with up to 140 hours on standby. The cordless phone's wireless technology has been provided by DECT, which RTX claims is well known for its low cost and "no interference no-nonsense" wireless technology.

Interested folks beware, though, if your house is on fire from a sudden notebook battery explosion - Skype doesn't support emergency calls. ยต
