YOU'VE GOT TO have a good gimmick if you're playing in a market as crowded as memory here at Computex. So how do you get something as common as a memory stick noticed? Easy. Appeal to the feline community, writes Crom the Cat.

Yes, the INQ thinks Panram International has displayed amazing taste by introducing the Cat bar range of memory sticks. The device - which is USB 2.0 compatible- emits a reassuring 'meow' as soon as you plug it in. Storage capacities range from 32 MB to 1 GB. Cat personalities include Tabby (yellow), Persian (white), Mouser (gold), and Handsome (black, of course).

The bars come preloaded with email software which enables your to send and receive email from your regular account without altering the settings stored on the guest PC. It can also be configured as a bootable disk as a tool for repairing faulty machines.

Other items on display from Panram include a 1 GB dual voltage RS-MMC card - interesting because 512 MB cards are currently the top shipping capacity.

Panram is also participating in another Computex trend in offering memoiry stick sized phone card readers. Its Duka mini card reader looks like a memory stick but is actually a USB 2.0 card reader which support both SD and MMC cards (including RS-MMC or miniSD with an adaptor).

The reader auto-detects when a card is inserted and is powered entirely via the USB interface. It supports 'hot-swapping' for cards, too. ยต
