Dude, Vista stole my interface

Hardware Roundup Microsoft jumped Sun gun
Mon Feb 19 2007, 11:49
OH MY. Microsoft has been touting how Vista uses a 3D user interface and how it was more expensive to deliver that than sending a man on the Moon, but it seems the company from Redmond is actually late to the party. Sun Microsystems has been working on this for years, and now its LG3D, or Project Looking Glass is available for Linux and Windows operating systems.

HardwareLogic reviewed Intel's entry-level Conroe - Core 2 Duo E6300. Although this is an entry-level Conroe-core based processor, it certainly packs a punch, with overclocking of over 1GHz over its stock speed possible. Besides reviewing the processor itself, the guys also took a look at Gigabyte United's new motherboard, GA-965-DQ6, which just got through a refresh, to a high 3.3 revision. Marketing is playing a "quad" card all the time, with support for quad-core CPUs, quad-BIOS. However, the most important part is probably the 1.33GHz FSB support.

To contrast the blue Intel-Gigabyte alliance, Bit-Tech painted Intel's scheme with a touch of black and green, with a review of the Inno3D nForce 680i. We know a bit about Inno3D, but this is its first serious foray into the world of high-end motherboards. Thanks to the fact that Nvidia designed the reference board, folk like Inno3D can enter the market with high-quality products.

Rbmods reviewed Spire's BlackFin case, which belongs to the cheaper and more affordable class of cases out there, but the best part is the cooling. The case is that the rear fan can accept 80mm, 92mm and 120mm fans (it ships with stock 80mm), which makes it one of rare cases that can accept one of best cooling solutions out there, CoolIT's Freezone and Eliminator.

TechGage reviewed the CoolIT Eliminator, which continues to use unusual 92mm fan. We don't see why the guys simply do not switch to 120mm fans, that would make ideal. Our own sample seesm to have got stuck for past nine days thanks to non-DDP-obeying FedEx Croatia lads, but we're sorting out the delivery right now.

It may seem weird to combine the words "Linux", "Hardware Enthusiasts" and "gaming" in the same sentence, but Phoronix seems to be having a go by testing various hardware and software bits and bobs in a Linux environment. They took several revisions of Nvidia's ForceWare Linux drivers for a spin. With the latest batch, CUDA and Geforce 8800 series are supported, which could propel GPGPU usage in Linux world.

Virtual-Hideout reviewed something that does not result in 3Dmarks, but yet makes viewing a more enjoyable experience. Regardless of how bizarre the subject can be, reviewing LCD cleaning tissues might be just the ticket to clean your LCD monitor. Mine sure needs some cleaning...

BCCHardware continued with reviews of somewhat unusual "hardware", a mousepad that moves with your mouse. Very weird, but worth a look.
