Micron outlines GDDR3, DDR2 memory directions

MEMORY FIRM Micron has told system integrators here in Barcelona that it will start production of 256Mbit GDDR3 chips in the second quarter of next year.

The initial speed of the chips, aimed at customers such as ATI and Nvidia, will be 500MHz, although in the third quarter of next year, its roadmaps show that will increase to 700MHz.

At the same time, Micron showed off its roadmap for 1.8 volt DDR2 SDRAM. It will release 666Mb/s 256Mbit chips in late Q2 of next year, and will start making 512Mbit chips in Q3, using 95 nanometer technology.

One gigabit DDR2 chips using .11micron technology won't be coming out of the fabs until 2005 though, according to roadmaps seen here by the INQ.
