ZUT ALORS! In a bid to save cash, the French Parliament is planning to switch to flavour of the month Linux distro, Ubuntu.

A government report has recommended the switch to 'free' software from that expensive proprietary stuff, reports Ubuntu news site, Fridge.com, which also claims that the switch is expected to provide substantial savings to French tax-payers.

If the switch takes place, 1,154 computers will be running Ubuntu prior to the start of the next parliamentary session in June 2007. The French Gendarmerie is already amongst the institutions moving from les fenêtres de Microsoft au jus ouvert.

The site adds that OpenOffice, Firefox and an open-source e-mail client will replace their Microsoft equivalents. µ
