GTA4 causes mass manslaughter

Online hotbed of car crime
Friday, 9 May 2008, 12:00

GTA4 INSPIRED more than 2.3 million people to get online with their Xbox 360s over launch weekend, according to stats compiled by Volish Guru Larry Hyrb.

The online console service saw 1m concurrent players at its peak, thanks to GTA's seamless built-in multiplayer experience that allows gamers to set up their matches via the game's mobile phone.

The game has now overtaken perennial favourites such as Halo 3 and Gears of War to become by far the most popular game currently being played online by Xbox users. Indeed, the average gamer spent more than four hours playing the game online in just the first week - not including time spent in the epic single player campaign.

Microsoft staff also revealed that Xbox 360 console sales rose by 54 per cent in the launch week for GTA, as gamers finally persuaded themselves of the need to ditch the old PS2. Some preliminary information (corroborated by Wired here) suggests that GTA was selling in roughly 60/40 quantities favouring the Microsoft console.

Have a look at the numbers for yourself, here. µ

54% pretty shabby...

Seems PS3 hardware sales have benefited even better than 360.

Xbox got 54%
PS3 got 127% increase.

However, PS3 was already outselling it.

PS3 matching..

Of course you also realise that the PS3 version also has friends list matching on the GTA IV phone, meaning the online matching is actually identical.

The only difference of course, is Sony are not implying that it's different, but Microsoft are..

You would have to be an idiot to believe their PR spin.

Mark, being a bit misleading?

You quote from this link..

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/gta-iv-926-000-copies-sold-in-five-days

to show the ps3 sales up 127% and prove that the xbox increase of 54% is shabby by comparison. Only problem is that the article you quote shows xbox sales up 125%.

Either read more carefully in the future, or don't try to spin things like that.

PS3 vs 360

Yes well the 360 has been on sale longer, so it's further up the adoption curve. The PS3 is still in the steeper region so sales will be higher. You can't measure the success of either box at a single moment in time. GTAIV, like Halo3 before it, simply provides a glitch in those adoption curves, further confusing the issue - and of course providing excuse for INQ confrontational news commment :)

54%=bigger volume

The XBox360 got 54%, the PS3 got a 127% increase.

But 127% of f*ck all is a lot less than 54% of quite a lot.

I have both a PS3 and a 360, the 360 is the better console. It runs in higer resolutions than the PS3 (almost all ps3 titles I have seen are 720p) and the games are much better.

The only advantage the PS3 has is its not Microsoft ;-)

Xbox 360 vs Playstation 3

Neither console is better than one another. Everyone has their preference. I for one prefer the Playstation 3, but have no problem playing the Xbox. Theres no reason to completely shut out the other console just because you think one is better, PS3 has its weaknesses, Xbox 360 has its weaknesses.

Also, never froze or even noticed a drop in FPS on Grand Theft Auto 4 on PS3.
