Verbatim unveils new 2.5-inch hard drive
EUROPEAN STORAGE OUTFIT Verbatim has just unveiled a new 2.5-inch external HDD with a 500 GB capacity.
The device, which weighs in at just under 170 grams and measures 8.45 x 13.45 x 1.6 cm is probably small and thin enough to fit into a normal sized hand. In a press release, the company boasts that its device is also decidedly low-noise, as it operates without a fan.
Verbatim’s business unit manager of multi media and peripherals, Kai Miroschnik, gushed that "the new half terabyte hard drive is probably the world's lightest.”
Despite its diminutive size, the device certainly does seem to deliver in terms of capacity, something the company has achieved by overlaying three 166 GB platters.
The device’s USB port can also purportedly transfer data at speeds of up to 480 Mbit/s, with a combo version of the device featuring a FireWire connector allowing for transfer speeds of up to 400 Mbit/s.
Powered by a USB 2.0 bus, the hard drive doesn’t require any additional external power. The company says that the device will be available from retailers some time this month, and should sell for about £150. µ

Not what I'd dub 'european' myself at least.
The drive is essentially a 2.5" drive in an enclosure, why's no-one tried opening it up, looking at the interfaces and seeing if it can work in a notebook, it'd be miles apart from WD's paltry offering of 320GB Scorpio's, less than a third of what desktop hard drives are.
Who makes the drive inside the casing though? Is this a Verbatim own drive?
