Does the BBC dislike Microsoft and Apple?

We asked Jeeves

CHARMING BUTLER JEEVES has the answer to many questions but the old fool don't know the answer to this one.

We asked Jeeves "Why doesn't the BBC support the Windows media player?".

Jeeves shot back with the "answer", which really poses more questions.

"Unfortunately we do not support Windows Media Player or Mac iTunes on the Radio 3 website.

"The BBC has been a pioneer in streaming broadcast output via the web and is constantly evaluating and testing new technologies.

"We have already invested a lot in developing an infrastructure to deliver streaming content. Real provides a free-to-user cross platform player and a system which ensures that best quality is delivered to users.

"BBC Radio recognises many users want a choice of format for receiving live streams. Offering a variety of platform-specific formats is not a simple or cheap task. Cost-effectiveness is a very important factor in serving our UK Licence Fee payers. We've given priority to providing a choice of streaming formats to the new digital radio services: Asian Network, 1xtra, 6music, BBC7 - these can be heard in both Real Media and Windows Media Player."

Sorry Jeeves, is the BBC saying because it thinks the Windows Media Player is crap? Or because it's too expensive? And what's this about cost effectiveness being a "very important factor" in serving the poor Brits who have to pay a £100+ licence fee? Give the poor Vole a chance! µ
