YOU BUMP INTO the strangest folk down there in Monaco.
Friday we got talking to a guy sunning himself in the Monagasque tax haven just about stuff and he told us more details about the Alpha EV8 and how Intel's finding that technology more and more important than anyone could have imagined.
By the way, witch-hunters everywhere, he wasn't in Monaco for the System Builder Summit. He was there to buy a car. He just happened to be milling around when the Monaco government hosted a reception the other night.
We listened, somewhat incredulously at first, as this guy told us how EV8 technology will find its place in the "Dell CPU", a multicore in order microprocessor with hardware threading and an internal memory controller.
We know that Intel has been touting this EV8 stuff around of late. And we also know that President Otellini of Intel was eager to get his hands on Alpha technology as long ago as 1998, when he confirmed that to us at the Other Plaice.
Dell will be happy at the news. Intel will be happy at the news. AMD won't be happy with the news because of course it's been flirting furiously with Dell itself.
Shame that HPQ is trying to dump OpenVMS, isn't it? µ
