MAJOR NOTEBOOK ORIGINAL design manufacturer (ODM) Compal will build a factory in Vietnam, according to a report in the Taiwan Economic News.

It joins giant Hon Hai (Foxconn), and LCD firm Chi Mei, which already have factories in the country.

The reason, according to the report, is because it's run out of capacity in mainland China. Apparently, it's also contemplating opening a production plant in Brazil - Hon Hai is there already.

The Vietnamese factory is expected to open in early 2009.

Compal will churn out 23 million notebooks this year, and expects the market to grow by between 20 to 30 per cent in 2008. µ
