Nvidia and AMD Vista drivers still dodgy

Only seven days to go
Thu Nov 23 2006, 09:20
ATI AND NVIDIA are working hard to polish their drivers before the OEM announcement of Vista that is due in just seven days. G80, Geforce8800 GTX and GTS still don't work with Vista at all and cards such as 7950 GX2 or 7900 GTX have some serious driver problems for games.

With 7900 GTX and 7950 GX2, we ran into artefacts in both 3Dmark03 and 06 and FEAR is the only game that works well. Nvidia's Open GL driver is still not ready and being far from polished.

This means you will have problems and may not be able to run the game at all.

ATI/AMD on the other hand, has a much better driver as it doesn't have 3Dmark artefacts of any kind. Still, ATI doesn't have s driver more recent than the one for RC2 but we heard that there should be a new Vista driver in a week, just before the OEM release.

Crossfire also works but not on RC2/RTM driver - you need to get a special one from ATI. Currently, Open GL performance sucks, as ATI is using Microsoft OpenGL driver, and it is naturally rather slow. New drivers from both Nvidia and ATI are expected shortly. µ
