INQ predictions of AMD price cuts spot on

Prophets and losses

THE AUGURY DIVISION of the INQ is patting itself on the back this morning after predicting the current AMD price cuts correctly to two decimal places.

Four weeks ago, we told the world+dog that AMD prices were in for a serious canning, although we did think that it would be a bit more savage with the Sempr0n's pricing which kept their prices more or less intact.

We said here that the Athlon 64 X2 dual-core 6000+ will be chopped virtually in half. And the dual-core 5600+ - down 43 per cent. Other dual-core offerings are down by between 20 and 30 per cent.

According to its official price list, the prices of the AMD Athlon 64 FX and Athlon 64 X2 chips have seen heavy cutting. The Athlon 64 X2 processor, the 3.0-GHz 6000+, now sells for just $241. It is still slightly more expensive than Intel's midrange E6400, a 2.13-GHz chip that sells for $224, but then again it is a bit faster.

The AMD FX-62 and FX-70 have been dumped from the product list and the prices of the AMD FX-74 and AMD FX-72 chips have been reduced to $799 and $599, respectively. This kills off the old $999 price bracket.

AMD's flagship Athlon 64 X2 6000+ was cut by 48 per cent, while the 5600+ has been lowered by 42 per cent.

The AMD 5400+ has been killed off, while the price of the 5200+ dropped from $232 to $178. The 3600+ was reduced from $102 to $73.

More elderly Athlon 64 chips, which used to cost from $102 for an AMD 4000+ have been reduced to $78 for the AMD Athlon 64 3200+. Turions will go for the same price as they did last week.

More 'ere, me old cock sparrow. ยต
