Sara Parkinson Fan Fiction:
The day is hot. Summer sun beats down upon Sara's freckled shoulders. It's been two months since she's had any steady work. The lipstick she applies is soft from the heat. Sweat trickles down the back of her neck and gets lost in her blouse.
Sara takes a deep breath. Her 5 inch heels cross the threshold of the office of her soon to be boss. Hot and sweaty, she remains confident and her convictions never waver.

Subject: CIA prefetch letters
Cute to say it's prefetch that brought up the CIA certificate, but when I search venezuela in google cia's factbook is the 5th link not the 1st, and if I look at the google source I see no 'prefetch' directive for the CIA link.
Explain that then.

Subject: Earth to AMD
Helloooo AMD are we on the same planet ?
AMD "lead" Intel ?
You must know something we don't because planetside those dumb gamers who used to be such AMD/ATI fanboys are all building Intel/nVidia systems as far as I can tell.
Its like using seaweed as a barometer, when its wet its raining, in the same way when world+dog are building Intel and not AMD, Intel are leading. I know its complicated but maybe they could use a calculator or something. Oh no, wait, they did and came out £661m short, maybe the battery is low ?
Reading the business speak jargon they spouted about the losses last quarter, you could grow your roses on it. It sounds like a cult has arisen in AMD, a cult that is living in yesteryear, believes in its own supremacy in denial of the stunningly obvious facts. These guys come across like they have their heads wedged firmly in the sand. They are resting on their laurels, dining on ashes, the bloody parrot is DEAD!
Its bad news for everyone because when Intel finally sink AMD's battleship we will all be out of pocket.

Forget the job angle. Can this cone thingy be overvolted, overclocked; perhaps waterwarmed? Can it take a big hard drive?

Subject: wifi theft?
Okay, breaking into a protected wi-fi connection is one thing, but it seems like accessing unprotected broadcasts is the fault of the broadcaster, not the receiver. Shouldn't they be fined for illegally sharing a connection? I guess i consider it to be more like pirate radio than hacking-- is it my fault that I tuned in an unlicensed station? Is it my fault that I can just flip open my laptop and connect to a freely available internet connection through no effort of my own?
I lock my connection down... if I leave it open and someone latches on to it, it's my on friggin fault. I am the one broadcasting.

Subject: Dell recycles Windows XP
Hello Nick:
I imagine the old e-mail inbox will overflow ad naseum on this one. For me it comes down to there's not enough new stuff to make it really interesting (and Aero doesn't count) versus the hassle of incomaptibilities and drivers.
I really don't know what Microsoft is thinking at this point, or if they even have a plan. What I really wanted would be something like a 64 bit Windows 2000 with the newest driver support. That would have been enough.
Instead we get.....well, you know the story. I hate XP mainly because of the product activation, and kept putting off using XP full time until last year. I have another program (Vue D'Esprit) that uses activation, and the two sit happily together on one computer. I'm leery of using them too much lest my machine crash and I won't be able to activate again.
That is not only a shame, it's f!cking ridiculous, and only shows that DRM and activation make trouble for honest people and that's all.
As it is I have no plans to go to Vista (I'm typing this now on Feisty Fawn Ubuntu--works pretty well), and I doubt I'll buy whatever the upgrade is to Vue. As for now I'm thinking of getting a copy of Ghost so I can image the hard drive since, again, in case I crash and can't reactivate.
Vue is still on it's first activation, but XP is most likely on it's last--which is another thing, how come we can't know how many activations we have left? However, if I can't reactivate XP if, say, I have to replace the motherboard or do a system upgrade, it's a given I'll have to re-activate Vue, which is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Meanwhile Ubuntu doesn't give a damn how many times I re-install, whether by choice or necessity, and that's the way I like it.
Sincerely,
Scott Peterson
Subject: Unlock your Nokia over the phone
Dear INQ,
This is an extract from my company's (one of the big four operators in the UK) procedures for telephone agents:
Conditions of giving out an unlock pin: [The customer must] have held an account with us for at least 1 month; have not requested three subsidy PINs in the last 12 months; not be in collections; and not have a blacklisted handset.
Advise the customer of the following: They must agree to pay £15 (inc. VAT) for each request.
Be aware that if they are within their minimum term and decide to leave our network minimum term charges will apply.
We cannot guarantee full compatibility of phone features with other networks
It is their responsibility to check if their specific handset will work on another network.
They may require an active SIM in order to unlock the handset (unless they have an Ericsson handset).
Advise the customer that their subsidy pin will be sent to them via letter within 28 working days.

Subject: Not surprised by AMD quarter loss
Hey Newsdesk. Why am I not surprised about AMD's quarter reports? Well, thanks for killing the S939 Platform. Nobody can upgrade their current hardware and new systems are built with the currently better hardware... Intel that is.
Don't bite the mouth that feeds you. Sorry, but it's been quite a while since you've released some hot hardware... And the FX platform is still unavailable in Europe!

Subject: US soldiers hate high tech gear
Just read your piece about soldiers not liking hauling around tons of hi tech crap. I am a Canadian Medic and I also hate lugging around tons of useless gear. I like two hi tech gadgets. My night vision monocular with infrared enhancement and the infrared strobes we put on our helmets and vehicles. The rest really just takes up space that could have been used for ammo or medical gear.
Anyway the point is you sound like a civvie that never had any military experience. I won't pretend to be informed about technology if you don't pretend to be informed about warfare.

How soon will the graphics cards get their own hard drive then?
It seems that I have a computer, and inside it there is a card which demands as much power as everything else put together, tons of ram, and now interfaces to everything. Just add a 1.8" drive to it already and call it a computer. Dual drives in RAID on the high-end models I think.

Subject: HP vs Dell
Dell has nice enough products, but HP gives often more for the money and sells in retail stores.
If you want a good deal on a Dell system or monitor, you have to wait for a sale. And one must always be wary of paying twice the normal price for that missing DVD burner or stick of memory.
Regarding monitors, standard Dell pricing is often too high. The competition is dropping prices week to week, but Dell seems slow to react. It is not everybody who has the patience to wait for that 2407 price's occasional drop from the statosphere.
Also, the panel lottery shenanigans don't help:

Subject: myspace is dying
Hi, Im a 21 year old university student (in Canada), and I feel I should tell you that no one really cares about myspace anymore. Im sure you must have heard this by now, but no one, and i mean no one, ive met uses myspace anymore, but facebook is used by everyone, everywhere. Its actually a bit revolting.
So while myspace may be the media darling, the real (albeit new on the scene, but thats just how it goes) mover and shaker is facebook.
PS yes I have a profile, but I never go on, honest....
Sincerely,
