Nokia N93 has Power VR

Texas instrument's Omap 2
Monday, 17 July 2006, 09:33
WE HEARD from a several sources that the new fancy 3.2 Mpixel Nokia N93 features Power VR marchitecture inside. It uses a new Texas instruments Omap 2 chip that uses the Power VR, MXB core inside.

This means that this is the first Nokia to have real Open ES 1.1 support and will let you play some games including a handheld version of Quake 3. This chip is still not Open ES 2.0 programmable but it can run some decent graphics.

Last time we heard, this fancy Nokia was supposed to feature Omap 2420 chip but we will try to confirm this later. Imagination Technologies also has its brand new SGX core that supports even OpenGL ES 2.0 and this marchitecture will get adopted by many chip vendors.

But it will take time till you see the phones capable of doing some real Shaders on their tiny screens. It takes 12 to 18 months for the mobile industry to pick up a new chip design. It's kind of slow for all of us that like graphics as we get new toys every three to six months.

I think that we graphics people have to pay much more attention on the handheld market as things are beginning to get mildly exciting. ยต
