US FIRM Micron said it has started sampling 128Mbit Q-Flash memory, and said it was an alternative to Intel's Strataflash memory.

The flash memory is pin and function compatible to Strataflash, and Micron described it as a "drop in replacement".

The memory is produced on a .15µ (micron) technology, and is an addition to its existing 32Mbit and 64Mbit devices, Micron said.

The firm said it will be a cost-effective solution, meaning that it will undercut Intel on pricing. Intel confirmed last week that it will raise prices on flash memory early in the new year.

Flash memory products are widely used in mobile phones and market research firm iSuppli said recently that there's likely to be something of a shortage on these products as the market recovers from the doldrums in which it's drifted for over a year. µ
