MICROSOFT'S PRICE CUT has increased boosted sales of its Xbox 360 by more than six times making it likely to win this console war.
Figures released by Vole show that people have been rushing to buy the machine since it dropped in price.
Good figures, but the Wii is still selling well and the PS3 is starting to claw back ground. Why would we think that Vole will be the winner in the long term?
Xbox makes the PS3 look very costly with little benefit. True you get a Blu-ray player, but the PS3 was supposed to ensure the future of Blu-ray not the other way around.
Blu-ray players will drop in price over the next few months forcing the PS3 to re-evaluate what it is designed to be – a games machine.
Microsoft is doing quite well on the games front, too, at least as good as Sony and much better than Nintendo.
Vole's main competitor is the Nintendo Wii which we have been taking the pee out of for yonks because of its name. But the Wii's real problem is that it is much more a Japanese cultural device than a worldwide one. The Japanese tend to like loud gadgets, things like motion controllers and step exercise things sell like hot cakes. Less important are quality graphics and sound. Generally it has to be loud and colourful.
This makes the Wii great for Japan but is less interesting in Europe and the US. OK, the Wii is cheap as chips but it is also very limited.
The Xbox price cut which makes it almost as cheap as the Wii. However the Xbox can do a lot more and has far superior graphics. Putting the two machines side by side, the Wii looks like the dated gizmo it is. It also lacks games of any substance and cannot manage online gaming at all.
Our guess is that it will be the shift to online gaming and services that will finally be the nail in the Wii dream. Microsoft is doing its online experience pretty well and chances are it will be expanded.
Having had a year's march on the much delayed PS3, and been online a lot longer than the Wii, Vole will eventually knock out its rivals and win the console war. µ
I being a 360 gamer for only one reason is the experience of Xbox live, i have met hundreds of friends, downloaded many movies and shared many experiences, Gaming is no longer just about playing but about the soical interaction just like school is not just about learning but about the social benifit. Microsoft did rush the system and ended up paying for it with quite a few flaws in their console but the 360 in the end is the best system out their because of its only advantage which is Xbox Live and what that brings to gaming. And to you people who think live should be free I disagree. One of the greatest reasons gaming online on the 360 advanced so quickly was because they had sort of like funding to enhance there product which they did. And for those of you who are saying this is coming from someone who only plays 360 I have a wii, PS3 and a 360 and I play all of them almost equelly. The PS3 to me is the better console in general because of hardware and so on but the experience you get with a console is what impacts you the most. My experience with PS3 i give it a 8/10 and that is because it's media experience and online experience (not including bluray) is ok. The Online needs improving and to me the only way they can do this is by chargin 20 bucks for a year or something. The wii i give 6/10 because it does not cover all types of games the average gamer wants to play but covers only a few. Also it's online attempt is pathetic. The xbox 360 i give 8/10 because of its hardware problems and lack of connecting media with other operating systems. I give it the same as PS3 because its live service gives it a huge advantage. It creates a whole new world for the gamer. So depending on what your looking at to me the 360 and PS3 are tied due to certain advantages. If sony ever gets their online gaming service as high as Xbox live then PS3 will be the supreme no doubt about it. But intell then i agree that the 360 will win this generations war unless sony does this. Because gamers are looking for both social fun and Fun in general.
so many people are calling the results to early in the game. No one can know for SURE which console will win this generation of gaming. looking at the sales of each console does help to give understanding about which console may be leading the pack at this point in time, but you just can't go and decide straight off the grill based on those figures *or* any fanboy opinions whether it be for 360 OR PS3.
I have to agree with that. The reason I don't play PC games online no more because of hacks. Even a newbie can beat anyone with hacks. They don't have fair play like consoles, and Xbox Live is for that. They have best dedicated servers. I don't get lag on LIVE. I do on Super Mario Bros Brawl. SMBB is only game on Wii with good graphics since it uses dual layer disc. But it's very repetitive, I got tired after 3 days. Anyways, I rather play Xbox360 on my 52in 1080p than on PC with 22in monitor.
The 9600 GT can outperform a two year old console, do you even remotely understand the computer industry? The fact that it took two years to manufacture the 9600 only shows how good the 360 is. It's graphics chip has been better than the best graphics chipset you could get out on the market for two years running. Fps with a console is retarded? Hitting more buttons on a keyboard that can easily be done on a controller is retarded. Give me a console FPS over any PC FPS anytime. Why? PC games are easily hacked, whereas consoles are not. Aim bots, aim hacks, hacks and bots in general. Yeah the PC is over rated, you can do a hell of a lot with the PC, you can play good games on the PC, that are then ruined by hackers.
First, anyone who has palyed FF7 with agree that you DO NOT need to have great graphics to make a great game. I still play it. I bought a Wii because the games are better with great story lines. That is something that M$ fails to do with the xbox, games are short and the only good game that game out on 360 is Gears, Halo is over rated. M$ covers up there lack of creativity with graphics that, now with cheap graphics like the 9600gt, can outperform the 360 in the graphics area. For people who have the money for a $9,000 tv and get an xbox for it, that is a waste in my mind. I have a PC to play games like crysis and oblivion because they are much better on PC than a console and FPS with a console is retarded, mouse and keyboard FTW.
To be ohonest, you can fry an egg on a Ps3 it over heats so much, as for the games, they lack so much in desent quality as compared to the likes of Gears of War 1 and 2 and Halo 3, only on Xbox 360 and wait Fable 2 as well so you must be off your head spending more money on a console/ cooker of a Ps3. Have fun playing Capture the Lag on Resistance 2
xbox 360 heavly relies on quite a big of 3rd person/fps shooters. Gamers have been crying out for a accurate control system for these types of games. I cannot see any other way to take these type of games to the next level on the console format. I believe it would be a very smart move to release a peripheral along side the current controller that acts pretty much like the Wiimote and Nunchuck. Before you shoot me down, try your hand at Resident Evil 4 on the Wii, then make your comments. Until you have tried this game out with that setup then your comments will just no cut it. Bill Gates and Sony need to put their egos aside and admit that Nintendo have created something that has been needed in the video gaming market for years. The upshot for both Microsoft and Sony is that Nintendo did it well, but there is MASSIVE scope for improvement. Both Sony and MS have the games down to a tee as Nintendo game are piss poor just. Any one of those two creating a better motion set up coupled with outstanding games will take the market from Nintendo easy as they just don't have the power in that tiny white box! By the way, i have a wii (i dig it) and the only games i buy are games that benefit from the control system, all other good titles are bought on the 360. I can't imagine playing Forza 2 or GTA4 on the Wii, go or even Guitar Hero with the awful guitar set up!!
What an uninformed article, full of mis-information. The PS3 has won the HD console war, and the Wii has found a place in the family room as well -- proving that there is space for two gaming consoles per household.

This article is bunk.
Umm, sorry to sound daft, but the controller charger, the lead to assign new wireless controllers, the batteries for the controllers, the ABILITY to play online and so many other Xbox features are entirely optional purchases...

PS3 includes them, its kind of like Microsoft saying they can make cheaper cars with only one wheel, two doors, no engine and there is a premium charge to drive it on the road.
I agree with many of the above posts, especially with those that state that the Wii should not be categorized within the same arena as the ps3 and the xbox360. Nintendo has always catered towards the broader, more casual/non gamers and, based on the fact that the Wii-fit has been selling like hotcakes since it's release, it has succeeded in generating very strong sales.
However, based upon previews that I have read about in the coming quarter, Nintendo will need a lot more than just the Wii-fit to generate stronger sales in the future. Though I think it may win out the console war just on the basis of its intended consumers, it seems to me that Nintendo's flagship for this winter will be the Wii-fit, which may be attractive for a period of time but might settle a bit come holiday 2008. If it expects to generate stronger sales it's going to need more oomph in terms of games.
On another note, where has the author been in terms of online gaming? Nintendo has been taking full advantage of this, not just by making it available but also making it FREE. Not to mention the fact that a lot of classic games, the key attractive point for nostalgics everywhere, are available for download at some very reasonable prices. If Nintendo can find some killer app that makes full use of the wireless capabilities of the Wii as well as the DS, the company just might find a strong niche. Take a look at the Pokemon games...I guarantee that if those games had come out this winter along with Colosseum the profit generated would have been just out of this world.
The author seems too quick to judge the Wii just on the fact that Nintendo's reputation as a company has never been within the same realm as Microsoft and Sony. I really think that's a mistake. It is a capable machine in more ways than one, expending less power, attracting broader gamers, and such, and though the graphics have never been up to par, I think there is hope yet for the console.
But then again I think a key way that the xbox could win this console war as well is if its hardware, the new blu-ray drive, an alternate processor, is rewired. If that happens while still maintaining a reasonable price, the console could certainly become a hot seller this holiday season.
... the xbox already sells worse than the ps3. Yes MS cut the price to sell more, yes the pricecut in europe a few month ago brought higher xbox-sales, for two week. After two weeks the xbox sales went lower than before price cut.

The xbox is a noisy, overpriced (you even have to pay for online play!), and technically already exhausted. And don't forget: the Xbox has a failure rate from 15%. The high failure rate of the xbox has damaged the reputation of us-electronics worldwide.

If you want really want to play with your xbox online and get the patches you need a overpriced "special" harddisk from Microsoft. The cheap arcade xbox has no harddrive and limited online functionality. The xbox games are far more expensive than wii games because Microsoft has hight license cost for because they must finance the "cheap" xbox price.

Graphics: The Xbox is simply a flatten out PC so the developers could use all features of the xbox from the beginning. But there are no more resources. New Wii and PS3-Games looks better and better. But Xbox games are staying on the same level. Soon the top wii games will look like xbox games, only with lower resolution.
According to you, the Wii "lacks games of any substance". This only sentence suffice to show your lack of knowledge of the subject.

Mario Galaxies, Zelda, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4, Boom Box, SSB, Okami.. You may not like these titles but there are definitely games with substance.

Most of Wii owners game library lack substance, but that's another thing.

More in line with your piece of opinion, on gamerankings Wii have 14 titles obtaining more than a 80% mark, PS3 15 titles, Xbox 360 62 titles.

According to this the game library of Xbox 360 is far better than Wii or PS3 one.

spot on though, nick.

heres a guide for tards who dont mind reading (i know, setting myself up for failure).

WII = old folk, children, and amateurs. why is this bad? its the classic apple mentality: simplicity, aesthetics and ease of use over functionality and depth (read: gets the job done for tards). why is this doubly bad? nintendo sacrificed the hardcore market killing off quality metroid, zelda, mario, etc repackagings to uh, well, repackage its old console and sell it to people who dont normally 'game'. noble, in a light, perhaps. perhaps. but when looked at as a gamer (not to mention other aspects [$$$]), who likes games, its a massive fail. so its quiet; buy an n64 if your concerned about dB (it actually has games, too). it has adequate online play for being free; well c'mon, they only have like maybe 3 online-capable games (that anyone plays). it consumes less power; sure does, but so would a x360 or ps3 if it was sitting in a corner collecting dust. also, take a stab as what uses more power: an old quasar tube tv, or a new pioneer plasma. surely, the quasar is superior for this. software sales are also poor, as is 3rd-party support (with the latter being at least traditional).

PS3 = vain, uneducated x360. as x360's direct competitor, a direct comparison is acceptable. does everything an x360 does, + plays blu-ray movies...on the surface. many ps3 games directly compared to x360 versions yield worse graphics (granted, not by a terrible margin), sport a lower resolution, and have a worse framerate. thats quite a lot alone. compunding this failure, its quite a lot more money, not even assuming cable costs and the like. sony has made a mess of the ps3: the controller, extremely overstated predictions of graphic and computational fidelity, poorly executed exclusives (mgs4, motorstorm), questionable material choice for the bezel (shiny, chrome laden, and a smudge magnet; again, tards come to mind), slow ass rom speed requiring large mandatory installations, even the interface is verbose. those are all important things to gamers, as the machine is supposed to play games. it does offer free online play, and its a bit better than adequate, which i commend. the ps3 however excels in non-critical feats: like having the controller recharge via the console (as opposed to batteries), its quiet (whoopie), and um, plays blu-ray movies. thats cool and all, but anyone who enjoys quality anything would not use their ps2 to watch DVDs; youd buy a dedicated DVD player. same with blu-ray. want quality blu-rau playback? ps3 isnt it. so whats the use of a ps3 beside an x360 if youre into the main function of a gaming machine? well.... exactly.

X360 = the less of the 3 evils. its faults? loud, unreliable, also has chrome on the bezel, and is built for the l33t (fault point for tards). ok its loud, and runs hot. but so what, its called speakers. they win. they didnt include an optical out for nothing. next is its unreliable. microsoft set aside a lot of money to fix your console for free, forever, should it break. thats honorable by todays standards (antithesis: this-gen sony). ive owned all 3 consoles: my x360 broke once, was repaired for free, and took no longer than two weeks for it to be returned to my door since i reported it faulty. no qualms (even got a free month of xbox live gold). next, it has chrome..... yes, and its shiny. well, tards sometimes need special incentive (i personally dont like the entire x360 design, but its adequate enough). lastly, its built for the l33t. so your grandma cant play it. well, mine can, and she could probably kick your grandma's ass, too. try education rather than dumbing something down. tell them to jump higher rather than lowering the bar. playing bioshock on easy will no doubt be more stimulating on many many benefitiary levels than playing wii sports. children ask for and buy the wii...... then dont play it much. why? because its boring. granted this gen of games "arent like how they used to make 'em", still, having a child play complex games and introducing them to more mature themes is much more beneficial to their intellectual growth than forever blanketing them with rainbows, dr. seuss diction, and 2-step dance moves. maybe youre a 30yr-something who "hasnt the time for these games". who's fault is that? you have a weekend: set aside a few hours, do some breathing exercises before, and engross yourself. its very rewarding. introduce your kids even.

anyway, without furthering on, there you have it: the summarized beginners guide to not sucking at life.

got to love that ati chip too, huh nick?
Apple in the gaming arena......lol......you'll be waiting a while yet matey

I'm not much of a gamer any more, but I always check out the games area when I'm in the store. In the stores most customers are looking at the Wii, not the 360 or the PS3. There's more shelf space for Wii games and accessories than there is for the 360 or PS3.

Stores aren't stupid. They know what sells, and base the shelf space on sales. The stores think that the Wii will win.
All the goon fanboys making up excuses for why the 360 won't sell well. You think people give a crap about power consumption? LOL - please. Then the complains about the sound, LOL, its not that bad, especially the new models ya know, the ones that matter.

The 360 is now an HD console with the largest volume of titles, an accessible media capability, and best online service for the least amount of money. What are you guys high? Blu-ray and motion controls cant save the others anymore!
Might be worth waiting for real time ray-traced games to hit the PS3 before calling this!
Untill there's a good chip for the PS3 it ain't going no where. And piracy makes a games machine sucessful can't say the same for the games though.

Also the online is a no-go area for the people that mod their systems cos they might get banned or something like this.

Just look at history and the sucess of consoles and they will be the most pirated that suceed. You get me?

Just ask my man at the bus stop and he'll fix you up, you understand?
check this graph, do the math, and be ashamed of yourself......
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/08/15/us_console_sales_july_o8/
btw, wii plays gamecube games as well.
a major argument for mums and dads, as you can see........
The playstation is looking more and more attractive with widespread HDTV's adoption. The xbox may edge closer and closer with each consecutive price cut, but at the rate the waggling station is selling, and giving all the good marketing steps Nintendo has been taking, I take it the war may end in a three way "Too close to call" state of things.
And he's an uninformed fanboy at that.

Have sales increased due to the pricecut? yes. Have sales increased 6 fold? Hell no. The most giving estimates made by retail watch groups I've seen is they've doubled in the US only which unless I'm mistaken is the only region to be effected by the price cut. Besides trusting MS when it comes to the 360 is like trusting Charlie Manson with children.

Is it a surprise sales went up? No. Sales always go up when you whack better then 10% off all of your products. Will they drop back to normal by the end of the month? More then likely cause the only unit to drop below the magic $200 mark is the least popular arcade unit that requires over $200 in upgrades just to match the premium let alone the Elite or any model of PS3. Proof of point the last 360 price cut which had the same amount cut on 2 out of the 3 systems barely effected sales. Granted it was caught in the pre-Halo hype but even with Halo 3 coming the sales only increased by around 50% over pre-pricecut sales and they didn't really jump to even double til after Halo 3 got released which carried the system into the high yield holiday season.

Anyway it's still a very bad idea to go comparing the PS3 and 360 because if you run the numbers based on both systems first two years on the market, ie a fair comparison, PS3 has done a lot better then the 360 did and it's still 2 months short of the 2 year mark plus the 360 had it's first year to itself in the next-gen market. It's also a bad idea based on current numbers because worldwide the PS3 has been outselling the 360 on an average of around 200,000 units a month since the beginning of the year plus if you look at the multiplatform game sales based on percentage of install base buying a lot of them are actually doing better on PS3. Hell GTA IV, the most successful multiplatform game so far this generation, has a 1 in 3.5 attachment ratio on both systems despite the fact the 360 has around 5 million more potential customers and had around 6 million more when the game launched.

Anyway unless I'm wrong about the 360's pricecut sales boost and assuming the PS3's trend of doing atleast 50% better over its numbers from last year continue it will probably close that 5 million unit gap by an additional 2-3 million between october and january alone.
Aaaaaand the fanboys have come crawling out of the woodwork.

Ironical that while on the topic of a GAME console, none of the replies mention even a single game title in defense of the Wii or PS3.

Guess what geniuses? That's what really matters, and what the average consumer ultimately cares about.
I bought an XBox 360 because I like the games better for it. I hate the bug-eyed, cutsey, anime games on the Wii and PS3. I despise Mario anything. I don't like the way the Japanese design video games. I don't care about Bluray. I don't care about motion control. I don't care if a machine is loud because I'm either wearing headphones or have my stereo cranked way up. I like how more and more PC games are making it onto the 360. Anyways, that's me.
The 360 definitely has the best exclusive games and the most games (of the 360 and PS3), the best and most popular online network with the best online content. Finally, this fall, it will have the best interface and communication features as well.

There is no way that SONY will ever catch up with their Blu-ray shoving attitude, coz that is what it proves the PS3 to be: Just a Blu-Ray player with games on the side. Wasn't it supposed to be a games console in the first place? It seems that SONY forgot that one this generation, as PS1 and 2 pwned, yet the PS3 is trailing behind in every way and SONY keeps lying to cover it up. Promising the joy of the world, yet never delivering on any of it.

It may be a culture thing in Japan, but even then MS has shown that with the proper titles it can overcome the PS3 in console sales and the future looks a little brighter for the 360 in the land of the rising sun eacht time they release such a title. Once Blu-Ray players drop below the price of the PS3, the console is doomed.

In the end. At the end of this generation the Wii will win in the console sales department, not in software sales. The king between the 360 and the PS3 will definitely be the Xbox 360 with the best features and the best games.
Alot of impassioned comments but as usual some people are speaking from the heart and not using their heads! Remember the laws of demand and supply that rule the sale all products, whether its oranges, shoes or consoles. The PS3 is priced as a premium product and will only ever command a limited market share as long as it is priced so high in relation to it's inferior competitors, regardless of the fact it is the most powerful, has Blu Ray and has strong brand loyalty (added value), it's primary function is as a games machine and fewer people are prepared to pay 100 pounds or more extra for the secondary features or say 310 pounds to just use it as a Blu Ray player. Reminds me a little of the Neo Geo from years back, technically it wiped the floor with all the other consoles at the time but was more than twice the price and the games were expensive, so hardly anybody bought it. The sweet spot for console pricing is about 150 pounds in the UK and the manufacturers know it, they hold the price as high as possible to gain maximum profit margins over the lifespan of the console reducing prices only when sales fall off, or when the competing products steel large chunks of sales, this can lead to a price war (which may happen in the build up to this Christmas). The WII is a niche product which although a competitor, it differentiates itself from the Xbox and PS3 and appeals to and draws from a different customer base in addition to the sales it steels from the Xbox and PS3 on price alone.

The prices of this generations consoles appear to have been held high for longer than in the past, when the prices drop into the golden bracket between 100-150 UK Pounds they will shift like hot cakes regardless of manufacturer, who ever manages the mid lifespan pricing and marketing of these consoles best, will secure the majority of remaining sales as the console reaches the end of its production.

Imagine if the PS3 was say only 20-40 pounds more than the 360 it would almost certainly outsell the 360 by a massive margin.

To be fair to the author of the article, I would agree at this moment in time, the 360 has the upper hand, that could all change if the other manufacturers get into a price war. If we abstained from purchasing on mass this would force all manufacturers to reduce prices!!!

Positive Microsoft articles on the Inq are rare thing, Microsoft usually comes in for a good bashing on hear, in the interests of balance this is the only positive one I've seen in the last year.
With all the 360 bashing and Wii Praising, I think that people are failing to realize that Christmas is coming up and children just DON'T buy consoles themselves.

To get a hold of a Wii to begin with, takes patience and luck. Not to mention the Wii doesn't have many "non"-everyone games that school students crave.

I can't see the 360 taking over immediately, but with socializing, graphics, movies, media centers, mod capabilities, etc.. you'll see a huge spike within the next 6 months. I may even buy another one for a different media extender in my bedroom. The Wii is becoming a bit stale, and is now collecting dust on my entertainment center.
I give a nod to the Inq´s take on almost all issues it reports.
But this statement especially the headline is so far from the truth it could almost not be worse.
I would rather go that far and say that the Wii has already won this console war if you count sold consoles. (Especially if you take into account how rugged each console is).
Wiis sales figures were called a fad a year ago and even today this gets repeated on and on. So i ask: "Why is the Wii outselling both competitors combined the last year. And a real dip in momentum not in sight. Not even a price drop since introduction. Adding the fact that Nintendo could halve the price on the Wii and still come out even (BOM wise). I have nothing against Sony or M$ products.
I do most of my lone gaming romps on a wicked Vista64 system and did so on a XP system before that. I like Sony Tvs and prefer the SE phones (thanks to Sonys Styling and Ericssons engineering)
BUT (oh do i love this loathed word)
The first console i own since around ´96 (Sega) is a Wii.
Because its fun to play, especially with friends or even for my Girlfriend.
And there are good games too, allthough its true that the image of kids toy and gadget surely hurts 3rd party Games quality.
So it is no wonder that 3rd party software sales are generally crap on Wii because the big EAs and Ubisofts and so on have mainly released Crap for the Wii (not taking it serious enough) Still the future is bright for Nintendo and no doubt M$ will take a solid Second spot until the next round of consoles makes its appearance in 2-3 years time. I just hope that Sony will execute better next time and not loose their heads over the strongest CPU and make a complete mess on many other parts. Competition is always good!
I do not see the Wii as a true competitor against the XBOX360 or the PS3. Yes the Wii does draw money out of that market, but they are completely different and attract users for completely different reasons. The Wii for what it is and the market it is in is quite good.

The XBOX360 and PS3 are in direct compition. No the PS3 is not better, they are pretty much on the same level, but I see the XBOX as an easier platform for programmers and developers and a cheaper solution for the end user. They also have a very strong internet background and a better game library. If Sony does not lower prices for the hollidays then they are going to get killed (unless MS has shortages).
Have to admit your evaluation seems a little bit skewed.

Sure the 360 will beat the PS3 at this rate but nothing is going to catch the Wii any time soon.

PS3 and 360 might well battle it out for the same demographic but the Wii is going for everyone.

Oh and Japan is lost. Microsoft lost it back in 2005 when it launched the console really...
ur favourite console suks and so do u roofles!!!!111 xyz console is OBVIOUSLY sooo much betta u have to be dum to rite this article!!!!!

Mark, Epic said that the xbox has two years left before it hits the max at what it can do. Recheck your facts. Also I doubt the xbox can catch up with the Wii but we will see.
Which of the others can say that?

The Wii is a massive hit with people who have never had a games console before, very young kids, women and grandparents.

PS3 and Xbox fight over the same crowd, most of whom also have a PC for gaming. Those same games are all on the PC at 30% lower price.

The Wii is something you can play with your girlfriend, wife, kids, friends etc. In fact it's the console i see in family pubs played by everyone. The Wii's market is so much wider and diverse, I just can't see how the PS3 or Xbox have a chance against it.

Slimmers and dieters - they love the Wii fit. I know a few mother's who have bought the Wii Fit for their kids, but in reality it's for themselves. They have a bikini, wedding or Christmas party and are trying to get slimmer.

Guilt Free Console - the Wii. Parents have been pressurised by the press impression of "violent video games" and "not active, getting fat and unhealthy kids" that video games have had. The Wii is "good healthy console" which gets their fat kid who likes computer games off his bum and jumping around. It also means that they feel less guilty about their kids playing video games. It's the "good parenting" console.

The Wii was sold out across Europe last Christmas. It's sold out this summer and Nintendo have already warned that they won't have enough for this Christmas.

Is there a shortage of PS3 or Xbox? No, I didn't think so.
Wow so many MS haters and so many Ninty lovers....I have all 3 systems so see all benefits but i find i lost interest in the WII were as my love for X360 and PS3 remains as the great games keep coming....as for who will win well we will never know as MS already have plans for the the next next gen and sony have the "10 year" plan...but were is nintendo???? we cant keep playing WII sports or similar just does not justify £170....were as £130 for an xbox (leaked by Argos, check maxconsole.com) you can not go wrong at that price and yes there are games for kids as my nephew and niece both play and prefer 360 as it keeps them interested....so right now MS is clearly going to be on top for this term of the war!!! I think Nintendo should start designing real games again otherwise the large "casual"base is going to start to dwindle....thankyou please
Yes...Xbox...it will win, but at what cost.
I cant see how cutting your console wins the console war for a start the 360 has been out long before any of the other 2 current consoles so it will have a bigger margin anyways but it didnt work because the Wii cuaght up. Its had to slash prices over & over & over to even get sales which means the others where selling more 360 can't sell hardly in Japan they've had to get Square Enix to put FF13 on its console but it ain't even getting released in Japan on 360.

The 2 others where selling more even for PS3 which stands at £299 with 1 free game or whatever deal you find. Ninty Wii will always be top because it isn't and never was classed as a next gen console. Nintendo proved it's not always about graphics and power they stuck to there guns for the casual market and it worked again the money can pay for Wii-2.

Microsoft have had hardly any big games this year it was all last year Halo 3, Mass Effect. This year it's exclusives are Gears 2 which will sell anyway and Fable 2, Fallout 3 is on PC, 360 & PS3 but the 1st 2 platforms get that extra content which probably won't do hardly anything.

I think this console war thing is stupid and people should buy a console 1 or more for the games they have played and liked. I owned a 360 traded in for PS3 but 360 did have some good games and I will be getting 1 when I can gurantee I'll get that GPU shrinked version.
The Wii is another Gamecube with fad controls and crappy online.

The POS3 is a movie player first and foremost, then a game machine. The online is nowhere near XBLA.

The 360 is the best bang for the buck this generation and has most of the must have games (MGS4 is a CGI movie with a few spots to actually play the damned game). It will have avatars and Primetime before $ony's craptacular Home even gets out of beta! What a joke.

360 FTW
Well,Xbox 360 IS probably best buy for a gamer between the 3, but you forgot casual gamers and small kids. There are no (a lot) games for kids on X360. Wii has bigger appeal. The other day in the shop a family was out to buy a new console for a kids. WHile me and my 13 year old son were trying to convince them that X360 is way to go, the man just asked me: What kind of games X360 have for kids? I tried but he was holding several titles for Wii and X360 had no chance to win this buy. This is something that happens more often. Sales of Wii can confirm this. As long as there are no games for others than "gamers", X360 can not overtake Wii.And this is where XBox live arcade should go in. Cheap games with same quality as Nintendo.OK, I go frag some more ;-)
Are you out of your mind? X360 does not stand a chance against Wii. Despite price cuts it still is being outsold by PS3 each month for this entire year. After yet ANOTHER price cut they outsold the PS3 by 20K units.

Wii has this all wrapped up; not much more to it.
I haven't seen that kind of bias outside a fanboy forum... well... ever. Actually Microsoft said sales for a weekend doubled. The arcade version sold six times as much. The rest of your article is just as flawed. Perhaps you could include sources, eh?
You are joking...right...?

The Wii is only selling well in Japan and not as good in the "western" world? Lets leave the "The Wii is a gimmick/gadget/not as good as...etc etc etc" out of this for a second, because, well lets be honest, taste differs, and lets look at the facts.

Wii has sold about 32 mil. units so far
360 around 20.5
PS3 around 15

Every week, the Wii sells over 50% of the world wide console hardware (yes, the Wii sells more than the 360 and PS3 COMBINED! worldwide, not just Japan)

The 360 will sell more units after its price drop, but will it be able to maintain the same amount week after week after week? It will probably sell more compared to two months ago on a constant base until somewhere next year, and will probably outsell the PS3 during this years holiday season because of this price drop and Sony not being able to respond, but not the Wii, sorry but I don’t see this happening, and there is no indication of this happening, anywhere.

Have a look at; http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php

Yes I know, it’s not the most accurate place, but accurate enough, with their forecasts just as accurate dare I say as the NPDs forecasts?

Nuff said

So here it comes, where…how…when…did you come to the conclusion that the 360 will win this console war? A Microsoft VP even said that Nintendo would probably win this generation, and that their main focus is to stay ahead of Sony.
Firstly one blatantly incorrect remark. The Wii can handle online gaming, Mario Kart being a shining example of this. Also I don't know a single person who only owns one console now, everyone I know either has an Xbox and a Wii or a PS3 and a Wii. The wii being used for more casual gaming or when friends are round. This being the case I think there's a strong chance the Wii will win the console war simply because everyone will have one alongside a more powerful console for serious gaming. I happen to own all 3 and from my experience I would say there's a long way to go before there is a clear winner between the PS3 and Xbox. It now depends on Sony getting some better games and improving their online services and Xbox getting a Blue Ray drive and keeping up its run of great games. Nice prediction but not really backed up with any decent information.
The "console war" arguement is so...silly. There's always going to be people who buy one and those that buy the other whether that be for certain games (In the PS3 corner MGS4, GT5 etc. - In the 360 corner Halo, Gears etc.). Additional features, PS3 wins hands down. Price, Xbox wins hands down. It's like comparing Porsche to Ferrari, never a winner just forever arguing over which is best
First things first "cannot manage online gaming at all" - have you even used a Wii yet? I play for example Mario Kart Wii online or you battle against another Guitar Hero - the "problem" is, that it is so seamlessly and easy you forget you are going online!!

For me the Wii is a fun and party device (like the PS2 with Eye Toys) while the other two consoles are simplified PCs connected to a TV - the games tend to be more complicated. What I would like to see is a Wii with HDMI connector (HD or Full-HD resolution) as I play things like Wii Fit or Wii Sports using a beamer and component cables just don't look as crisp :(
I agree, can't see PS3 catching xbox and the Wii is a bit of fad at the mo, the games are alright if your 10. But how long till we get a Wii2? With the amount of cash theyve made from the first wii, their's no reason it cant boast all the features of a xbox and more.
With this nerd-thinking everything seems correct. But you forget the purchasing force today are WOMEN, non-nerd, non-geek. So Xbox will be great for the geek/nerd/aggressive kid with money. Everyobody else (98% of the market) will jump for the Wii, graphics or not.

Ough, and the internet thing - don;t you think you are wishful thinking and again concentrating on the nerd/geek factor ?

Wii delivers TODAY, not tomorrow. It IS the winner.
With M$ it is always tomorrow which never comes.

Just ask the IT guys at the LSE ;-) .
I wouldn't be so quick to write off the Wii, as young kids (like mine) think it's great, as do adults who have never been into gaming before (ie. it's target market).

I agree Nintendo has a bigger struggle selling more games, but that is why there are so many gimics like Wii Fit.

You're probably right that the XBox will stay ahead of the PS3 (the console we have) as Sony has lost too many exclusives.

I think the Wii should be considered separately, because it's approach is completely different.
The X-Box360 winning the console war, what?
Microsoft is going to release the next console replacing the current XBox360 just like they did with the first XBox and they will leave customers with no support on an EOL product.

The PS3 it's the best console on the market simply because it's not just a console. Yes, Sony is really slow at implementing all the needed support for audio and video codecs and other features but the hardware is capable of doing much more than what they achieved so far and newer algorithms at an higher precision could easily run on the Cell SPE DSP units.
There is no way the 360 will win this generation.

It's already running out of steam, developers saying there is no more left to give from it. (Epic).

It's got a horrendous reputation for relability, and it's VERY LOUD.

It's lost it's 18month Euro headstart, more proof sales are dire.

Finally, the console war will be going for for at least the next 5 years. PS2 has sold 120m or more units, 360 is at 20m units. Are you seriously predicting the outcome so early? The PS3 has a MUCH broader customer base, be it movie lover, casual gamer, or hardcore game. The 360 has limited appeal outside FPS games.
Only a traditional console player (white male 15 to 30 years old) could come to the conclusion that the Xbox will beat the wii based purely on an assessment of graphics and online game play, and because they believe it is too Japanese. IF graphics and online gameplay was the be and end all, then PCs would be the dominant platform.

the thing that nintendo has done that neither the Xbox 360 or the PS3 has done is extend the console market to non-traditional console people, like nursing homes. Software like Wii fit, might be a total gimmick to you and I, but it has been successful in making people who would never buy a console sit up and take a look.

A good market to look at is the handheld console market. The PSP is light years more advanced than the DS Lite... yet the DS Lite is the dominant platform. Why is that? because you can get software like brain training and Cooking which has expanded the platform beyond the normal handheld market.

As for being too Japanese, thats a laughable argument. one of the most popular software titles ever is the Singstar series.... last time I checked Karaoke is something that started as being rather Asian/Japanese, yet now Singstar is popular in Western markets. obviously being too japanese isn't an impediment to success there.
...with that prediction aren't you, Nostradamus?
Ill-informed, as one expects from Farrell. The Wii may not be able to do as much as the 360, but it also consumes a fraction of the power and doesn't sound like a hovercraft when playing a disc. Furthermore its online gaming is perfectly adequate, free, and so far I have not been abused for being a "n00b" by a bunch of 12-year old Americans.

If you judge on sales figures then the Wii is the clear winner of this round so far.

I just can't wait until Apple increases its presence in the gaming arena, whatever will Farrell make of that?
The article smells of fanboism. Saying that the PS3 only has blu-ray as a + feature over the cheap arcade and then dissing blu-ray to give the impression that PS3 is just waste of money is bad.

If you want an HD and a wireless connection to your arcade, then the price isn't so sweat anymore and the PS3 is suddenly very competitive.

Likewise saying the WII is only some noisy/color machines that non-japanese doesn't want is equally bad. There is lot's of people still wanting the WII over other hard-core gamer consoles because it's not hard core games they want. The wii has hit another market than PS3/Xbox and will live in that segment for years by itself.

But true, the Xbox will definitely selling better as of the price cut.

...but I'm still not buying an Xbox until they rev the chipset down to 45nm.

I'll continue waiting.
