AMD slips in US retail outlets

Figures show jewel in AMD crown tarnished
Friday, 20 April 2007, 07:18
SOURCES IN India claimed that figures available from US firm Current Analysis show that AMD's market share in retail markets in America are considerably down.

These figures do not reflect direct sales in the US, but include some big names including CompUSA, Best Buy and Fry's. Sales of Dell, Gateway and other direct outlets aren't counted in the figures.

What is interesting, however, is that the Current Analysis figures have been regularly trumpeted by AMD as underlining how well it was doing.

The figures show for combined notebook and desktop sales, that in Q4 of 2006 Intel had 58.8 per cent of the market, but in Q1 2007 had 66.1 per cent. In contrast, in Q4 06 AMD had 41.1% and in Q1 07 33.9 per cent.

On the desktop front, the figures show AMD with 53.7 per cent of the market in Q4 2007, which fell in Q1 07 to 42.3 per cent, while Intel grew its desktop sales from 46.2 per cent in Q4 06 to 57.8 per cent in Q1 of 2007.

The source was unable to provide unit sales in the retail chains, nor unit sales for direct sales in the USA. ยต
