MARKET RESEARCH firm Displaysearch has broken out the proportion of notebooks made in Taiwan, or perhaps better, made by Taiwan manufacturers.

As readers of the INQ know, original design manufacturers (ODM) make notebooks for many of the multinationals, and also make notebooks for distribution through the channel.

Displaysearch now estimates that 89 per cent of the 29 million notebooks that shipped in the third quarter of this year were made by the ODMs.

HP, Dell, Acer, Apple and Acer Gateway outsource 100 per cent of their notebook barebones assembly, while Sony, Toshiba and Fujitsu still do some in house work.

Quanta has 34 per cent market share, Compal as 24 per cent, while Wistron has 13 per cent. µ
