SHUT UP!
I can't read it anymore: "Will Apple switch to AMD cpus?"
Are you story tellers or journalists/analysts? Tony Smith and Mike Magee might be good entertainer at speakers corner for some tourist but shouldn't judge about Apples futur, their crystel ball is foggy, greasy and full of cracks.
How much of a fool do you think Steve is? Selling x86 MacOS X to Dell and NewHP? For what? Of course they demand it but for what reason? Not to spend money on a second OS with every PC but and only to cut royalties to Microsoft. And they give a damm about Apples futur after this!
Job killed the clones and now has changed his mind! PC-cloners even now try to get some of Apples margine profit (Northgate) and Apple is happy that they can do this even better in the futur. Even if Apple tries to get an exclusive Apple x86 design, do you really think Jobs will stand the cloners? Slots (PCI), RAM (DRAM333), sound(some PCI sound card available for Macs), graphics (ATI, NVidea), all the same. What's the diffrence? OpenFirmware which is "open" standard and some chips on the motherboard connecting things. Nothing some good device driver programers couldn't emulate, or i.e Linux device programmers haven't done already. As an investor I would sell Apple and buy the cloner shares.
Apple spent a lot of mony into emagic, the owner of Shake and into the switch campain. Obvious to make a lot of people extremly angry!!! What else to you expect when Apple told everyone who can read or hear that they should buy Aplle PowerPC hardware with MacOS X now. And next year? Apple tells them that now they can (use their old x86 hardware or) buy x86 Apple-hardware for MacOS X? An example of extreem perfect timing I think!
And last and least Apple only talks to AMD about it's x86 cpu, nothiung else. Don't waste a second to think about all thoses people that went from Motorola to AMD. Or that AMD has some knowledge on how to build processors. Bloody nonsens, it's only to get MacOS X to opteron/Hammer. ... But why should Apple who co-designs the G4/5 talk to AMD how they can port MacOS to x86 hardware? They should be able to just buy as much AMD or Intel cpus they want? Will AMD to the work of porting? Isn't Apple capable to do the chpset any more?
And one more. Apples will use opteron/hammer cpus because those are the most speedy ones they can get. And Apple will be in the middle Magehurtz race. It's the only chance to get there. No of course, you couldn't simply buy some of those 3 GHz Intel cpus now and some 4MHz next year and use them. That's too easy. You will be simply ahaed of everything, instead in the middle of the fight and struggle and soley bound to the futur of a cpu manufacturer again?
If you keep on doing such great journalism and analysis, I don't doubt that Apples futur will be better than yours.
Still a fan of british journalism,
Ralf
PS. As I'm an alien, please forgive ever germanism and error.
You're forgiven Ralf. Here's another on a Macish topic.
Subject: The new integra pc
This isn't to flame you but I had to say something about this new pc. They are claiming it will run circles around the iMac? I guess they haven't read the specs of the G4's. Plus the iMac comes a Nvidia Gforce4 graphics card, there running something called SiS whatever that is. This thing is a joke, here is my prediction and you can quote me if you like or remember this when it happens. I give 6 months, and they will pulling merchandise from the shelves, and claiming a loss on this thing they call a computer. It has happened twice before with other companies claiming almost the same thing, this will make a third. They claim it will do video editing and other multimedia functions, but the funny thing is, it's a "windows" machine they don't do multimedia very well if at all. That¹s why professionals, (musicians, newspaper, magazines, publishing, web design, graphic artists, animators, TV studios, reporters, photographers, print shops, recording studios, & scientists) use a mac for their work. The thing doesn't even have a DVD burner, the iMac does. It has DVD player, who the hell watches DVD's on their computer really, (other than travelers). I'd rather be able to burn DVD's of the videos I edited. If the Integra can do all this supposedly, how is it going to export the video, back to the video camera, (Boring). This thing is a waste of time and money, but hey I think windows is a waste of time as well. Well I had to sound off to somebody, thank you for letting me rant.

Here are some thoughts on ATI's drivers.
Hello Letterman,
I just read about the person who was having troubles with their PCI ATI TV Wonder Card. I also have this card and it works fairly well in my old Win98 system. I just acquired a new computer with Windows XP installed and I tried to get the ATI TV Wonder Card to work. I found out there is new XP compatible software available from ATI's website but the TV screen doesn't display correctly unless you change the color depth from 16-bit to 32-bit (or vice versa). You have to apply this stupid workaround every time you start up the ATI TV software. (Also, there is an ATI software bug that causes the screen to zoom in uncontrollably when you change channels too quickly and you have to kill the app and restart.) Even more amazing is that this card is still being sold in stores and being represented as XP compatible. I gave my TV Wonder to somebody who still uses Win98 and I bought the AverTV (stereo) card by Avermedia. The Avermedia TV card works great and comes with the latest (are you listening ATI) XP drivers available. The AverTV software and drivers installed easily and work great with WinXP. As of me I will never buy another ATI product again. Thanks,
Pokey
Subject: RE: ATI driver support "disappointing" C$200 mobo because my fingers got klutzy :)), but I find that as long as stick to simple stuff and don't try to tax the ATI SW, I'm okay.
Here's a couple of pages about my encounters with ATI drivers. <<http://www.diaries.com/maddog/stories/storyReader$72>> <<http://www.diaries.com/maddog/stories/storyReader$108>>
Perhaps the new ATI Catalyst drivers are better. I don't know. I'm kinda of reluctant to update the ATI drivers again. Everything seems to work so why change it, esp. with all the hoops that ATI makes one jump thru to update their precious broken drivers. It's not like ATI actually notifies me when the drivers are updated.
Keep up the good work.
Anthony
And here's one on bumblebees, IBM and AIX
A READER POINTS OUT that IBM usually shoots itself in the foot...
Bullets from IBM guns tend to fly at the speed of a bumble bee, like the humble bumble bee's flight itself, a conundrum of avionics. A reader also points out that:
The humble bumble bee's flight is actually a conundrum of idiotic research, I'm afraid. Apply fixed-wing aerodynamic theory to a helicopter and that shouldn't be able to fly, either.
As for IBM killing AIX, try to remember back to Monterey ... I know it's ages ago. IBM planned to release AIX on IA-64 first, "and then maybe linux when we get round to it". Marketing then told them this was arse-about-face, and while they'd had loads of queries about linux on IBM IA-64, they hadn't had a single query (okay maybe that's a slight exageration) about AIX.
So IBM have now released linux on IA-64, and "will release AIX if people want it" which they patently don't.
AIX is walking dead. But unlike most companies, IBM is quite happy to take your money from you if you want to hand it over - AIX will be supported for ever if customers are prepared to pay for it. Bit like OS/2 actually :-)
Cheers,
Wol
