China invents its own DVD technology

Self reliance will mean exports abroad
Tuesday, 15 April 2003, 16:07
A CHINESE COMPANY is to invest nearly $50 million in a factory making optical heads for DVD drivers, a move that will reduce its reliance on imports.

The Shanghai Daily reports that the optical head for DVD players was devised by Hechuan Photoelectrics and production of the parts will start later in the year.

Until now, mainland China has relied on importing the heads which has reduced its ability to be competitive in the industry.

Aside from boosting exports, home grown manufacturing of the optical heads is set to give a spur to domestic DVD consumption. µ
