PROBLEMS WITH Satellite notebooks, notably the 5005 S504 and the S507 have resulted in a class action being filed against Toshiba in the US.

Two sets of lawyers have filed suit. Kohn, Swift and Graf says on its website that these models, promoted by Toshiba as "the ultimate multimedia machine" with 1.1GHz Pentium III power, overheat and shut down. The complaint also alleges that software fixes offered by Toshiba result in processing speed slowing down.

The other filing, by Kiesel, Boucher and Larson, repeats the allegation on its site, word for word.

There's no clear figure about how many people are affected by the problems, which have prompted end users to set up a separate website, and which also has resulted in Toshiba removing reference to our own articles about the problems on its own US website.

You can find our stories about the problem in Toshiba notebook CPU disclaimer means you're toast if you're chilled and Toshiba "desktop" notebooks still have problems.

The two lawyer web sites are here and here.

There's a copy of the complaint at this website.

Meanwhile, US Toshiba Satellite 5005 S504 and S507 users are asked to fill a questionnaire if they want to join the class action, here. ยต
