If the face fits throw away the pin

Find a pin and put it down

BOFFS are suggesting that people should dump PIN numbers and move to facial recognition systems.

Boffins and Boffinetes at the University of Houston have developed the URxD face recognition software that uses a three-dimensional snapshot of a person's face to create a biometric identifier.

The team have built a field-deployable 3D face recognition system. The 3dMDTM optical scanner uses a 1-pod configuration, which is connected to a PC. A webcam captures a continuous video stream which detects if a person is looking at a 3D camera.

According to Network World, the punter sits still for two seconds and the camera automatically scans their face. The system can enroll the subject into the database, or perform an identification.

It can work out if the person is wearing glasses or grown a beard since the last time they were tested.
