Intel puts pressure on airline

Keep those shipments rolling
Mon Aug 23 2004, 10:24
A REPORT SAID that Intel is pressuring the Irish government to stop airline Aer Lingus canning its cargo division.

Ireland On-Line said that Intel, together with other large companies, paid a visit to Aer Lingus at the end of the week in a bid to stop the airline's move to end its cargo services.

That's slated to happen in a couple of weeks.

What's the problem, and why should Intel put its oar in?

The major problem for Intel is that it has two factories in Leixlip, near Dublin - fab 10 and fab 14. It's also putting another €5 billion into Ireland during this year.

Leixlip is built on the site of a former stud farm.

Any reduction in competition on cargo services would probably affect its bottom line. Chips are very suitable for transporting by air. And long gone are those days when big wagons would transport white boxes made by Intel at Leixlip and re-badged and branded by the European distribution channel. µ
