Shackled to the grindstone

AN ONLINE survey has revealed that far from liberating punters from work, devices such as Blackberrys and Treos are turning people into office slaves.

In an online survey, Digital Life America asked respondents whether devices like the BlackBerry "chain you to work more than they liberate you."

According to Arstechnica, more than a third agreed, a third remained neutral, and a third disagreed. Those who owned a BlackBerry were also almost equally divided, with 34 percent agreeing and 37 percent disagreeing.

However, the survey revealed that those who owned a BlackBerry were more likely to work long hours. Just under 20 per cent worked more than 50 hours a week, compared to only 11 percent of the general population.

True, their incomes were more than 50 percent the national average, but most complained that they did not have enough time allocated for personal time. µ
