Forrester report labelled schizo

Microsoft faces another uphill battle
Tuesday, 29 July 2008, 14:28

MICROSOFT BLOGGER Christopher Flores rants this week that the latest report from anal lister firm Forrester is ‘schizophrenic’ as it contradicts its own earlier observations.

The report, reportedly issued earlier this week by Thomas Mendel states that large businesses have ‘rejected’ Vista and advises IT managers to hold off on the OS.

Flores suggests in his blog that “heck, even Forrester doesn’t agree with Forrester!” as the previous ‘Building the Business Case for Windows Vista’ report outlines the five main reasons why enterprises should start their migration to Vista.

Microsoft's battered and bruised OS has received scathing reports since its launch in January 2007 with numerous complaints about hardware requirements, intrusive security features and a lack of compatibility with older applications. This has, of course, resulted in companies delaying the move from ancient but trusty XP to the flighty and flakey show-off Vista.

The problem Microsoft now faces (apart from the obvious) is that if companies won’t upgrade from XP to Vista, how can they expect they’ll want Windows 7 when it launches in 2010, since it will also be based upon the broken Vista OS? µ

What problem?

I wonder how did you get XP you sit in front of right now? (If you got MacOS or something just get lost.)
Chances are you got it just like you'll get next version of vista or whatever comes next: either it'll arrive with your box or you'll end up leaching it somewhere.
It won't stop you from ranting about new products though...

The OS is not Broke

Folks keep pointing to the Vista has if it where infected. Give us a break! This OS is the best one MS has put out. And that is really saying something, where else can you get to changer hardware at a whim, try all manners of applications, gaming, Office productivity, entertainment? Where!! Apple not even close.... Linux what a friggin joke!
Forrestor is Schizo, not even aware of what was reported by that publication not more than 6 mos previous.
And this rag... stop the headline grabbing and start reporting more of News!!! You know actuall reporting not making your own stories as you go.

Biased Article?

I am among the Vista users that actually purchased it separately because it meets my needs. Unfortunately, Emma chooses only to report on the faults of the OS as she refers to "scathing reports" and "numerous complaints".

Even my dear ole da'

Even dear ole da' is willing to give Vista a try. He's a diehard Apple Macintosh enthusiast, and I mean from the days of OS 7, why despite his advanced 66 years he even has an iPod shufle he won at the supermarket!
But the ole Mac Mini never was whut it was cracked up to be. It be slow and frightful.
A Vista laptop is what he was askin' for yesterday.....

Sorry Drashek... never been able to make heads or tails of any comment you've ever posted

Crash- it's not broken but you gotta admit it could be better. Per usual I'm not switching until I have to or until I find out Windows 7 is worse. For my money XP is running better than Vista having run and had to fix both.

MickyMouse is broke

I shouldn't comment since I've never downgraded to this broken Vista OS due to it's integrated spyware but someone showed their ignorance here and bashed linux. Did you know Linux has bunches more software supported than MickyMouse Vista? Course not, else you wouldn't have posted.

Wow.. Vista doesn't run in a bubble people.

You know... i understand those who take up their keyboards to post about the nonsense Vista Haters. Yes Vista has gotten better since release. Yay.

But, Vista does not run in a vacuum. Please remember this. Rolling out vista into a business environment that is chock full of ludicrously expensive third party apps, and in many cases a plethora of commercial and industrial equipment that runs into the millions of dollars to replace; is a much different story.

Case in point; older accounting software like ACCPAC, for smaller firms on the bottom edge of that bubble, rolling out vista requires a massively expensive upgrade to all of their Accpac software. In one of my clients cases, it'll be roughly $20 000 to go out and rebuy a fully working software component of their business so they can roll out vista. Other option? Just use XP. Hmm... tough decision? Not really, especially considering much of the RIP software in use for their 4 $75 000 printers will also require an expensive upgrade... So lets tack another $10 000 onto that.

So then in order to 'upgrade' to vista, to get systems that work just as well for what they were intended to do, run business apps / generate revenue, we're looking at the costs of implementing Vista on machines (not very expensive in the grand scheme of things) and then integrating / upgrading new software for all the specialized equipment and Accpac...

So essentially to get Aero... (greater security is not an issue as security doesn't rely on the workstations themselves to any great degree) and say we are running vista we get to spend in excess of $30 000 for software upgrades alone + Costs of migrating to vista + upgrading individual printers, scanners, etc that are not supported...

Why?

Its not a case of hating vista, its a case where unlike past upgrades, there is nothing badly broken enough in XP sp2 that requires it froma business standpoint. Nothing. So if i am acting in the best interest of my fir, or hell If I was running a firm with shareholders... Why the hell would I dump extra money out the airlock simply to arrive back where I was? A fully working shop making money... Vista ain't gonna make me any more money, that's for damn sure.

Microsoft sucks Mr. Crash

@Crash:

Your name is quite ironic, considering what you're spouting. Windows Vista needs to die. Hell, if we could figure out a way to guarantee no one would get hurt, I'd favor firebombing the Redmond, Virginia location(that's Microsoft headquarters, right? Hope so.)

Windows is for people who are too lazy to dig into how an OS really works. Apple computers are for people who are the same way, but have more money than they deserve. Linux only has a tiny amount of market share, but I think it deserves at least 10-20% penetration. I think it could get up to 3% in 2-3 years if an advertising budget the size of Microsoft's would magically appear. And, yes, I know that won't happen.

Here's the truly disgusting part of it. If you use virtualization to put Linux in charge of some of the lower technological layers, replacing the stuff Windows already does, you can have a Windows environment that runs a TON better. You can have Aero, games, EVERYTHING looking and acting exactly the same, but less of a resource hog and better running because it's supported by Linux.

Microsoft sucks, and it sucks bad. I bought a Vista computer because I didn't want to throw $1200 at something sight unseen. Tomorrow, I'm going to back up what I have, install Fedora Core 8(Linux), and then a few days after that, I'm going to work on virtualizing it with Windows XP so I can dig into gaming and run a certain program that has a sucky Linux implementation(Berkeley college's fault, not Linux)

Microsoft needs to die as a company.

Sorry for firebombing comment

20/20 hindsight tells me my firebombing comment was a really bad idea. I now wish to retract it. I am not a violent person, I just have problems censoring myself.

I apologize to anyone offended.

The schizo behavior is easily explained...

Microsoft paid for or wrote the "Buisiness case for Vista" opinion, and the latest one was written by someone not on the payroll who has tried it.

Vista's NOT totally garbage, but it's resource requirements are insane... any given bit of kit will feel ~2x faster running XP or Linux.

Pretty much every one I know who has bought a new PC lately (~ 8-10 folks) has installed XP over Vista.

Several more are dual booting Linux now... 2-3 are running XP in a VM under Linux as needed.

I even had to install XP on my sons brand new laptop, as his businesses software refused to run on Vista properly, regardless of what was tried. (Yes, I made him buy an OEM copy at Fry's...So Microsoft wins twice)

quick, call Steve Ballmer

We got 2 people in the same place saying Vista is OK.

BTW It isn't OK. It's bloated and nasty and requires far too much new hardware.

Trolls, fanboys and loonies

They're only putting up a token resistance on this article. I was expecting an outpouring and got just a trickle. Which is fine wherever "drashek" is concerned.
As for me, I have been changing my hardware at a whim for the past 20 years already, and I don't need an officially bloated and DRM-infected OS to help me.
XP is fine for gaming, all manner of applications and productivity as well, and it works well. Took it long enough, though.

For those who actually need Vista, I am glad they have found something that answers their problems.
For me and many, many people like me, I have done the OS merry-go-round often enough already to recognize that XP is where it's at and Vista brings nothing that I am waiting for.

For those Vista lovers...

This was wrote several year ago but it's still so valid as the the very breakfast you take every morning:

But we live in a free society, right ??? So if you choose a bloated DRM infection with no lube then, very well, enjoy your pain....
