DoJ says remedies have reduced Microsoft monopoly

There's more competition now
Fri Aug 31 2007, 10:06
THE US JUSTICE DEPARTMENT (DoJ) said that the final judgements it entered against Microsoft have succeeded in their goal of fostering competitive conditions in middleware products.

Microsoft's "anticompetitive exclusionary obstacles" have been circumvented by additional competition from a number of competitors including Firefox, Opera and Safari.

In addition multimedia content competition has been fostered by the popularity of Apple Itunes and Adobe Flash>

Dell and Lenovo are now offering computers pre-loaded with a Linux OS rather than Windows. And web services for email and other apps have dented the domination of local applications.

Its judgements were intended to re-invigorate competition, and weren't intended to eliminate Windows' monopoly or reduce Windows' market share by any particular amount, said the DoJ.

Final judgements have been extended until November 2009 and may be extended beyond that date. ยต
