Fiji gets speed browsing from Acision

Not quite as exciting as speed dating

EVEN A paradise like Fiji needs a high-speed mobile Internet, it seems. So Vodafone Fiji has just acquired Acision's Speed Browsing and Easy MMS/picture messaging technology.

Previously these two mobile services had been routed via the Vodafone Australia network. So the expense of long-lining content through sub-sea cabling had limited the amount of content available to Fijian subscribers.

A culturally diverse location like Fiji has broad recreational interests, ranging from Bollywood films to rugby. So it's easy to see why speeding up mobile Internet browsing makes sense.

But why bother to enhance MMS/picture messaging? The answer lies with the increasingly interactive nature of the good old Mobile Web 2.0.

Yup. MMS provides the capability for mobile blogging, both for uploading user-generated content and getting that content pushed back down to the handset.

Obviously Vodafone Fiji hopes its new gear will boost both browsing and messaging traffic. It could even start making serious bucks out of its Vodafone Live service in Fiji.

The implication is that if Fiji can afford Acision's tech, then so can pther smaller mobile operators worldwide. µ
