THE International Telecommunication Union has claimed that a spate of telecommunication outages to the Middle East were the result of sabotage.
Five undersea cables were damaged causing huge disruption to Internet and telephone services in the Middle East and south Asia.
Union spokesman Sami al-Murshed, told AFP said that while there was still an ongoing investigation into the incidents it would seem that there was a deliberate act of sabotage.
While it was possible that one cable could have been damaged by a ship's anchor the others were too deep. Besides the chances of five cables being cut within a two week period was unlikely.
Murshed said on the sidelines of a conference on cyber-crime held in Gulf state of Qatar that the cables lie at great depths under the sea and are not passed over by ships.

...who implied that the readers suspecting sabotage should all be wearing "tinfoil hats"? (Or some comment of this nature...?)

Does the fact that they are so deep not make sabotage more unlikely? the saboteurs would have to do a lot of effort and be professional divers, when they could just as easily get at it at shallower places.

Or is this some FUD exercise and are we going to blame the chinese or iran or putin personally again? Or how about a chinese/iranian collaboration organised by putin?
Nah, it was a Russian spy satellites. They were testing high powered space lasers to see if they could target underwater information cables.
Interesting point. Some more facts to consider: Deeper cables are not buried or sheathed. An abandoned anchor was photographed near one of the break points. Cable companies routinely use surface ships with special chambers to repair cables. The US Navy has a sub outfitted with such a chamber (USS Jimmy Carter). Finally, Iran was one of the the countries most affected by this event.

So, while it could easily have been sabotage, it could just as easily have been coincidental. Or both.
While DRAGGING My Huge Elephantitis Sized Member, Some KBul Cutters Poising as Security Specialists Cut My Doink Off.It Was Horrible, Sultan of Bunei KISSED IT.

Deep sea cables can be in kilometres of water also. So it's a little implausible that this is an act of terrorism, since it's not a trivial matter to locate an underwater cable on the sea floor at such depth - although severing a cable is probably only as difficult as dropping something on it. This is more likely IMHO to be an experimental military action, or at least a group worryingly more well resourced than your Joe-blow terrorist.
Since a good slice of the worlds internet capacity is Dependant on undersea cables this is actually kind of scary new prospect for future terrorism.
I wouldn't be surprised if Israel had something to do with it. Wasn't they one of the few countries in the Middle East to not be affected by any of the cut cables.
I'm tellin' y'all now it's SAAA-boTAAAGE!
That's a heck of a coincidence.
I read a theory, where one (one being some security agency of the world) wishes to find the conduit where threatening activities flow. Sever the possibilities one by one until the suspected noise goes quite.
A real coincidence is that a high level terror bomber/murderer was taken out maybe when he temporarily lost his cyber eyes and ears.
