AMERICAN PURVEYOR OF CONSUMERISM Wal-Mart is offering a cheap PC loaded with basic Vista, and later in the year will ofer the Everex GC3502 pre-packaged with Ubuntu Linux.

The Everex PC is based on the VIA C7-D processor which clocks at 1.7GHz. It'll also come packing 1GB of DDR2 533MHz SDRAM, a DVD/CD-RW drive, six USB ports, a modem and an 80 gig hard drive. The PCs will ship with OpenOffice.org 2.2 productivity software too. Not bad for the promised price of under $300.

Although there's no official word on Everex shipping off a Linux-ready PC to Wamart, Desktoplinux.com says a reliable source close to Everex reckons there's one on the way. µ
