THE FORMER English colony of Virginia has warned the glorious People’s Republic of China that it needs to follow technology standards and not impose them on the rest of the world.
That's its job.
US Under-Secretary of Commerce Christopher Padilla warned that if China went around creating its own technology standards then it risked "technological isolation".
He feared that creating unique standards for China was all a cunning plan to keep foreign companies out of the huge market.
Padilla said that China is facing Japan’s problem during the 1980s when it thought it was large enough to have standards and force the world to dance to its tune.
In the same way that this effort backfired, China risks turning itself into a “lonely island of technological isolation” and cutting itself off.
American companies were finding it difficult to do business behind the bamboo curtain because security standards for information technology products that made it costly for them to enter the Chinese market, Padilla added.
Beijing wanted a China-specific 3G mobile phone standard over internationally recognised standards. While that might give a competitive advantage in the short term, it inhibits collaboration, limits product development, reduces consumer choice, and hindered China's competitiveness and growth, Padilla muttered. As China issued a collective yawn. µ

1+ Billion people in India working Hard to Learn English. China will be left behind in 10-15yrs if they isolate themselves any further. Hasn't China learnt from History? hahahahaha
. . . that the US Under-Secretary of Commerce has just been told that China, home of a quarter of the beings on this planet, is once again not going to blindly follow US-imposed standards that benefit only the US and its retainers.
China is actually going to - shock, horror ! - do its own thing the way it thinks is best for China. So the US Under-Secretary of Commerce is fretting that US companies, for once in the past century, will not automatically have their way and US CEOs will not be able to high-five each other on the green over another fat bonus for another ginormous contract won with ease.
China is waking up, shaking its fleas, and realizing that it has everything it needs to create its own future. Hollywood means nothing over there. Our whole entertainment industry is just a casual curiosity to them, something to check out and have a laugh at.
The Chinese have their own culture, their own way of thinking, and absolutely zero reason to cater to the whims of any US company.
Whatever the Chinese market lacks, there are enough Harvard-trained Chinese PhDs to find a way to give it to them.
And once the Chinese brains have found a solution, there are more than enough trained Chinese workers to implement it. We've been using their labor for the past half-century, and they have learned from it.
China will do its own thing, Mr. US Under-Secretary of Commerce, and there is fuck all you can do about it.
This seems a government, not business driven ploy. As such, it will most certainly be carried out, how tecnologically sound is a matter soon to be judged by the global marketplace. It's the Chinese government's idea of a strategic solution to foreign competition not unlike past US practices of imposing high tariffs on imports to protect domestic producers. Regardless who, government or business, is behind this ploy it cannot stand the onslaught of global competition.
I doubt this rant from the US is actually about "standards" and is really about the lost income from patents that will no longer be relevent when the standards change.
"you want to do business with the Chinese?

do it the Chinese way, or get out, simple as that.

close to 16 billion people, you seek money greedy b@stards, but you want every country to dance with you.

so people need to dance with the United States = that is what you intended.

why the rest of the world standard use Km and liter.... but you use miles and gallon?
why call international Football, Soccer?
why call American Football, Football? why it is not call Soccer instead?

are you making things difficult?
are you stupid to bring up global standard?

STFU please. thank you, shut your hole, it smells bad.

europe warns the US, our euro is > ur dollars, better wake up."

LOL.

You sound exactly like an overweight, McDonald's-munching, SUV-driving AMERICAN.
NO. The District of Columbia does not count towards the 50 states. I think the joke in the article refers to the entire US as the former British colony of Virginia because Virginia was the first English colony here. Still...weak joke. You could also say the English part of Britain was the former colony of Rome that was later overrun by various waves of invaders, most of whom never left and now make up the vast majority of the population and gene pool (including the French). Most every country on earth has been a colony of something or someone at one point or another.
1. We don't call them "mobiles" in the US. It's cell phones or cellular phones. You never hear anyone refer to them as mobile phones.

2. District of Columia is not a state nor does it count towards the 50 state total. It's a DISTRICT with no voting members of Congress. DC was created to prevent any state from having the seat of power for the nation and while the city of Washington has it's own police force, it's ultimate protection is the US military, not a state agency, which has never been used but keeps DC independent of the states.

3. Most of the major cell phone providers in the US are ripoffs. However, most cities have small independents like Cricket and MetroPCS that offer unlimited calling for a reasonable price. There is competition and you don't have to go with the ripoff big cell providers if you don't want to.
With the virus laced porn coming from the US or not to be nationalistic, also ASIA where supposedly the "best porn is" it's little wonder that China is embracing the penguin, yes I remember articles on the subject that China was linuxising.

What I like of China is their stance against pornography online and on other media outright. What I don't like besides their brown skies, is their blocking of legitimate anti-porn organizations in their country.

Unfortunately with the resent hypocritical attitudes of other illegitimate religious representations I can see why this is occurring.
People like "leil" make Europeans look retarded. Please don't approve those comments.
Isnt Washington D.C. located in the District of Columbia which has the same status as a state since it counts towards the 50 state total.

I believe Virginia is across the river.
The reason the US mobile phone system sucks is because the companies that run them want to make as much money as humanly possible.

By limiting choice to home grown products they prevent others from coming and challenging them, as China is doing. The mobile companies and manufacturing partners use their own patented technologies and persuade US regulators to endorse these as official standards for the country, thus the companies make it more expensive to do business in the US.

It sucks but it is true
That (All) Western Business Interests have already allowed China a great deal of infringement on its intellectual properties and technology. Chinese boffins are impressing their party leaders by asserting "improved" standards, such as compact disc layering. WTFC. Globalization is allowing the world to catch up. But at a cost. There are many strategies to ping pong, hockey, soccer, and (not that you'd know anything about it, Leil) football. Paper money, ice cream and pasta are just a speck of the inventiveness that's come from China. Many wonderful inventions come from all over the world, including US. Virginia can say whatever the hell she damn well pleases; and so, I guess, can you, also. We are not amused (at everything, but just most of it). Economies, like people, are poor players who strut and fret their 15 minutes of fame upon all the world's a stage at where this too shall pass.

There are patents associated with standards. And adapting a standard can cost some money.

Even as an American I have to laugh. Doesn't China manufactures most of the USA's electronics? Who really could push who around?
If that was so they wouldn't be using Chinese to communicate in China where almost every province or part spoke a different language of sort they would be speaking in English? Well seems like the Chinese have been able to standardize on a mode of communication for the country themselves. They should be able to standardize on their on local technology. Even the US does it. Freedom of implementation just like how fragmented South America is in their standardization of HDTV signals. LOL.
Those communist ba…. better listen to us! America is all about the freedom to choose and if they don’t choose our ways, then we won’t buy anything from them anymore! Oh wait, our nation is dependent on their slave labor for cheap goods. Ummm please send us the specs for your new standards . . .
Praise Buddha for the $.99 cell phone and Allah for the $4 a gallon gas.
Seriously, I don’t want to offend anyone, but the country I live in has become ridiculous. America has sold itself to so many people; it doesn’t know who to kiss anymore. We used to be the country of the free and the brave and now we are the country of the rich and the stupid. We lost our identity and now we’re trying to sell what’s left.
My phone works quite fine in the US. Now, I don't use it to watch movies or anything, but that is just plain silly anyway. You do understand that the US is a pretty big place right?
The US has security standards ? or do they need security standards the US government can easily circumvent. We wouldn't want to have secure security standards.
You have gotta be kidding me :-).

Lets see, USA the country that invented its own standard for 2G (CDMA) Vs rest of the world (GSM, but hey maybe 3 billion people are wrong).

Then promised to have one standard for 3G, but then decided not to (EV-DO Vs WCDMA for the rest of the world, but hey, who knows maybe 650 million people and counting are wrong).

And 4G ? Surely by now the US has learned that in a globalized world, global standards are the way to go (LTE) ? Verizon seems to have figured it out.... but Sprint ? Nope, Mobile WiMAX.....

Give us a break.
"While that might give a competitive advantage in the short term, it inhibits collaboration, limits product development, reduces consumer choice, and hindered China's competitiveness and growth, Padilla muttered."

Did he mean China or the US?
The only problem they fail to realize is that China's population ... is friken 1/4 of the world. You'd think that they probably have enough competition IN CHINA then even using Europe AND US ....

Course, India does come with the other 1/4 of the world.
