MyDoom.C hurls power of consumer PCs at Microsoft

Oh joy

The WE'VE HAD THE alpha version of MyDoom, we've seen the beta, but now here comes MyDoom.Gamma, or "C" as we call it in our faux Phoenician alphabet soup.

Ken Dunham, a security guy at iSECURE, said Mr MyDoom.C is "spreading in the wild", and performs a denial of service attempt against microsoft.com.

It doesn't come through emals, you'll be relieved to hear. Instead it opens up your back door if you've forgotten to lock it with a firewall, and climbs through the Khyber Pass.

Corporations won't be too bothered if they've got policies which protect their machines from Windows viruses, or if they use other operating systems such as, for example, Unix, Linux, Mac OSX or AmigaDOS.

MyDoom.C attacks the Vole with a GET command out of port 80 and then lurks around before trying again. After the 12th of any month, said Dunham, it tries again and again and again.

MyDoom.A commits suicide on the 12th of the month, but MyDoom.C absorbs lots of code from the first virus if it's on your hard disk, and goes for it big time.

Said Dunham: "We are going to see a lot more of MyDoom and similar worms that generate a high volume of e-mails and disrupt the net at large".
