Opteron, Xeon Woodcrest compared in SQL test

Benchmarking test shows results
Fri May 04 2007, 20:00
COMPUTER PERFORMANCE firm Neal Nelson & Associates released results comparing an AMD server to an Intel server system using practically identical machines.

The firm claimed the results showed the Opteron server in a better light. It delivered six per cent higher throughput compared to a Xeon Woodcrest server, processing SQL transactions linked to a relational database.

The firm uses its own SQL transaction benchmark, generating traffic from up to 500 WWW clients at once, and aims to give the major subsystems in servers a thorough kicking.

Both servers were configured with similar clock speeds, memory, disk drives and OSes.

A chart displaying the test results and other technical details can be found here.

In recent weeks AMD and Intel have constantly bickered about benchmarks on systems using their respective chips. µ
