Saudi man killed daughter for using Facebook

A YOUNG SAUDI ARABIAN woman, from the country’s capital, Riyadh, was beaten and then viciously murdered by her own father after being caught using the social notworking site Facebook. The woman was apparently in the midst of an online conversation with a man she had met through the site when her father walked in on her. He beat her and then shot her at point blank range, according to an al-Arabiya website report.

Far from being shocked by the brutal incident, many in the extremist Islamic gulf nation see the story as yet another example of the turmoil caused by the Internet, social networking and online chat as it continues to conquer the Arab world. The country’s clerics warn the people time and again that Facebook and other not-working sites are the root of all evil, especially when it comes to wayward yoof, who are never allowed out alone or unsupervised under strict Wahhabi Islamic law.

Although the young woman was murdered in August, her death, which had not been reported in the West, came to light this week following the daft rantings of Saudi preacher Ali al-Maliki, one of Facebook’s most vocal critics.

In an interview, the melodramatic cleric raged that "Facebook is a door to lust and young women and men are spending more on their mobile phones and the Internet than they are spending on food". He also said that women should be entirely banned from the network.

According to the Telegraph, there are about 30,000 Saudi Facebook users to date, most of whom have to resort to fake names and cartoon profile pictures to avoid violent consequences from their family members. This has led to Saudi bloggers nicknaming the site “Faceless”. But in a society where it is illegal for singles to leave home alone, or choose their own romantic partners, the site seems to be answering a very basic need. Maybe even more so for the Homosexual and Lesbian Saudis who find themselves eternally trapped by the stringent re ligious laws.

There are several popular Saudi based groups on the not-working site. One of the larger ones is “Single and Looking in Saudi Arabia” which, at last count had 1846 members. Posts on the group wall say it all. One reads: “Riyadh is not single father friendly, they ask me not to enter unless i have a female with me, which break the hearts of my 2 lil ones.”

Amidst threats that the Saudi kingdom could block the site, over 6,500 people have signed an online petition to prevent the threat from materialising. But in a country where honour killings go unpunished and democracy is unheard of, an online petition seems unlikely to have any kind of effect. µ

Even if you think it's none of our business and we shouldn't interfere you still know in your heart that it is wrong. There is no excuse for a culture that allows this, it is wrong and it should be judged as it is a crime against humanity.

A country's liberty

The above comment is rubbish. Saudi Arabia is a country that has a right to function as it sees fit. If it is their custom and religion to restrict young singles out alone, one should learn to respect that rather than make fun of it. This is exactly what breeds contempt in the heart of one towards another. Obviously the above commentator thinks that a country is "Smart" if it allows it citizens to do whatever they please, even if it is against general consensus. This does not have to be true in all cases. Saudi Arabia is a "Kingdom" and not a "Democracy". They are surviving as they see fit. Look at Iraq, America thought democracy would be a good idea and overthrew the dictator. The thing is that these people have been used to surviving in peace over centuries of such rule. To think what is good for America is also good for them is absolute bollocks. China is "Communist" and that is how they have learnt to survive in this brutal world. What makes you think you have the right to talk down on others customs and practices. If they really want to be able to express themselves, they always have the ability to do so from more liberal areas like Oman, Bahrain etc. Please, refrain yourselves from insulting and poking fun at other cultures. Democracy is NOT the only thing in this world that matters! I am from India and I know how chaotic even a democracy can get. There is good and evil in every society, learn to accept that.

As for this dude who killed his daughter, that is definitely going overboard. I have lived in the middle-east for 3 years of my young life and I know for a fact that his reaction was TOO MUCH. He definitely needs to be punished.

Don't blame the people blame the corrupt government and officials. Oh and its Wahabi not wahabi Islam. 

Why is it wrong to obey religious laws? In SA some are really screwed up but in general the society as a whole doesn't support homosexuals let it be.

A man killed his daughter in cold blood for looking at a website - a social website, not even a political or anti-muslim website. His country will almost certainly not punish him, most of the religious leaders there will agree with his actions.

Don't even think about defending that. It doesen't matter if it's a Kingdom, a democracy or a Facist dictatorship - its WRONG and that's all there is to it.

Not to start a political debate...

Too bad your not a German Jew right before WWII... A new born Chinese girl... a 14 year old Russian slave... a 16 year old Ethiopian girl... or any of the other groups that are not only oppressed but tortured and murdered by their government's policies and cultural practices. 

A man in India doesn't have much to fear, and an Indian in the Middle East is just a foreigner talking with a group of men that have nothing to fear from their government either. Please don't speak for a group you obviously don't understand.

Excuse me but didn't saudi arabia have the most extreme and effective deep packet inspection internet censorship on the planet (sold and maintained by american companies incidentally)
So how come they are not blocking facebook if they think it's so bad?

So....

In the middle-east fathers/family honor-kill daughters for using Internet and socializing applications.

In the modern and oh so great modern Western civilizations fathers kill their two year olds for knocking over their Xbox 360, or mothers beat their ex's with their infants.

There are people all over this world that over do everything in this respect. SA is known for letting honor-killings slip by. Even if SA was democratic it would be still Islamic, so stop pretending that democracy will help.

Religion causes problems everywhere in the world, even if it's separate from the state.

Please, editors of the Inquirer, do not post bad stuff about Saudi Arabia. They help us spread freedom and democracy and fight terrorism. I assume they feel very bad that almost all of the 9/11 hijackers came from their country. They are our best friends and we enjoy holding hands with them.

Whoa!

Whoa now! Guys, there are criminals too outside the Western world. We have freak accidents and occurrences as well in the rest of planet earth. I started reading things like "The culture agrees with this!" and "He will never be punished because this is O.K!" Lol! It's as if stating that the *only* human activity in SA is that which is culturally/religiously accepted - impossible. This guy is a criminal and/or psychopathic, nothing cultural/religious allows massacring your kids. It's not like he was disciplining his daughter, he just shot her! wow you have taken in and accepted something called propaganda.... I am sure there are some wackos that have killed their own children for knocking over their consoles however to portray the entire west as this is to be anti-west and down right ignorant.

The point was not that Westerners are incapable of murder or sin but that if that happened in a democratic country the person committing the crime would be punished for it not rewarded and called honor- killings.

I pity your soul, for you will find the truth before or after you die...hopefully you won't end up being surprised. 

By no means is America perfect...but it is also not the great Satan like you think it is.

Also it is not bad to think that your country is better than others...its called Patriotism

beside you just yelled at us for doing it then told us yours is better...great circular logic there.

As long as there is religion and government, sad stories like this will wash over us, regardless of the origination of the tale. Don't kid yourselves that because witches aren't burned in Whiteville town square anymore that the will isn't there to do so....

Condemning something so easily identifiable as murder as this case won't stop self-satisfied US Christians from sleeping warmly in their beds, dreaming of the Apocalypse (delivered from afar by cruise missiles to those "backward" peoples that "envy our freedom.")

Why do such Ignoramuses think they are qualified to comment on the middle east?

Firstly, honor killing is virtually unheard of in the Arab gulf, it's prevalent mainly in the Levant and parts of North Africa and is NOT restricted to Muslims. This idea that all Arabs are Muslims and they're all the same is foolish.

Secondly, if this man did kill his daughter than it is an aberration, not the norm and generally all such crimes are punished. I say generally because Saudi Arabia is still a third world country where some crime still goes unpunished - mainly cases of abuse and not more serious crimes like murder. 

Thirdly, democracy is YOUR solution, one which does not work for us. So please take it and shove it up an orifice of yours that is normally reserved for excreting solid bodily waste.

Do I use the example of the 14 year old girl who tried flushing her baby down a toilet in order to claim that western culture promotes child killing? No, and I would appreciate it if you were to grant us the same luxury of not blaming our culture for the crimes people commit.

I think this is horrible. The father should not give her this facility or he should warn her first although her act was against islam but she should be married, because marriage is the solution for this.

Saudi Arabia does have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Murdering Wahhabi Scum

The Child murderer was Wahhabi. 

The Wahhabi's put Abdul Aziz ibn Saud, the first Saudi King in power in 1902. To say that the Wahhabi's are an extreme fundamentalists Islamic sect would be a gross understatement. 

The Wahhbi's are responsible for ALL of the unrest in Saudi Arabia as they have zero tolerence for civil rights as understood by the west. The Wahhabi's also support and fund Al-Qaeda.

The Wahhabi's have long criticised the House of Saud for allowing western oil interests in Saudi Arabia, and the Saudi Royal family owes their existence to Wahhabi support. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

Yes the United States supports Saudi Arabia, because oil is the basis for Western economy.

They hate us but they need us and without Israel to focus their attention on they'd be fighting each other.

But in short; they are a land, a region and a religion that that has a very short supply of human tolerance. No different than the Papist Inquisitor, nor 17th century Hapsburg Europe.

The New World is a place that has high ideals and sometimes fails to live up to them but those ideals are there none the less. 

In 20 years they'll be a footnote and won't matter as their oil will have long been burnt by western factories and automobiles. Then they can blow themselves back to the desert in search of heaven and 20 virgins.

But in the meantime, killing your daughter makes you murdering scum.

Too bad they have oil

It's too bad places like this lucked out with oil. Otherwise, these places would make Africa look like a 4 star vacation property. The Saudis get massive revenues from petroleum and their country still has terrible infrastructure. 

Should this miff you off, then use energy more wisely and lobby for higher energy taxes. Less demand means less money goes to these assholes.

Barbaric middle aged society!

This is very sad. A young girl had her life taken away by her own father. This is yet another example of the barbarism in Islamist society. The Islamic world is still very much in the middle ages. They have yet to catch up with the modern free world, because of thier medival, archaic religion. The younger generation must start a revolution, to free themselves of theocratic injustice.

You are right. Saudi Arabia is a sovereign country. If the government approves, the fathers should be allowed to beat any of their wayward daughters and sons to death. Visit Bahrain on the weekends. Where are the fathers then? Their sons(and the fathers of the sons) come to chase prostitutes, drink alcohol, do drugs(all of which are available in Saudi, but at higher cost) and nobody is waiting to kill them. Get real!

Stop, engage brain, then post. Did you consider that the Saudi Arabian government DOES represent the will of its people? Perhaps those people want to live that way? Scary, I know, but it is possible.

Does it make that society morally correct? Well, who decides what is moral? If the law reflects society's morals, then if he is unpunished by the law then his action is moral. If religion sets the morals, then he is fine there as well.

Ridiculous

Is murder of one's own Daughter. How respectful is it to see that as justice under any law or religion? They just don't want to lose control ofall the power thier goverment has under those rules. I am sure they know better than to believe that this is the correct punishment for such silly acts. Ruthless regime in that country needs to be overthrown just like in Iraq. Power to the people, Let freedom prevail.

Dark ages

I bet he wouldn't have killed if it was his son using facebook. Men in that country can pretty much do what they like to women and have no respect for them at all. They only see them as baby making objects who must do what they are told. I think it's disgusting how it's acceptable to kill your own kill child and the powers to be do nothing. I am not anti-islamic, I have muslim friends who are modern men and women and have respect for others. Its about time this country came out of the dark ages and loosened up a bit!
