Microsoft links to open source Zend

THE SUPREMEe maker of proprietary software, Microsoft, has hatched a deal with a an open source rival Zend.

Zend makes commercialised PHP, the popular scripting language to build open source Web applications that rival Microsoft's own products.

A spokesVole said that the deal will mean that PHP programs will run on past and future versions of Microsoft Web server software including the upcoming Longhorn.

Zend's co-founder, Andi Gutmans, said that while PHP has always worked on Windows it never performed very well. The deal will mean that technical improvements by Zend and Microsoft to make it easier to run PHP on Windows.

These will be available to PHP's active base of contributors for further enhancement at the beginning of 2007.
