Says AMD

SUN'S SHIFT towards Intel, which spawned its recent love-in with the chip maker came about because of Sun's success with AMD, AMD says.

Sun's decision to adopteron the Opteron presaged the box maker's shift towards the X86 architecture, Pat Patla, director of the server worksation division told the INQ over coffee and biscuits this morning.

He reckons Sun's shift started when it began building Opteron servers and it has thereby come to value an X86 strategy.

"AMD partnering with Sun helps them understand X86," chipped in Pat's mate, Johne Fruehe, a channel market developer at AMD. "Our success opened the door to Intel who are coming on our coattails," he claimed, in the manner of a professional spinner.
