British MP spams constituents

Working hard - too hard, some might say
Thu Jan 02 2003, 08:34
CONSTITUENTS OF THE LABOUR MP for Reading West are livid after they received emails which showed the email addresses of every single other constituent on the political list.

Martin Salter MP, a Labour member who says he's "working hard for Reading West" on his Web site, sent a copy of his annual report to his constituents and a "Christmas Card" greeting.

The letter, which the INQUIRER has seen, with the headers, display hundreds and hundreds of his constituents' email addresses.

One of the constituents told the INQUIRER that he believed Mr Salter's email showed a "total lack of respect for his constituents' privacy". He also expressed his concern about the ignorance displayed by the email.

He has written to the MP saying: "If this is representative of the standard of IT knowledge within government then all I can say is god help us all."

The MP has apparently fallen foul of that elementary pratfall -- rather than BCCing (blind carbon copying) the emails, he CCed everyone in his address book. µ
