Nintendo DS bricking trojan loose

On the prowl for fresh DS
Mon Oct 10 2005, 16:11
NINTENDO DS USERS face their machines being bricked, just like Sony PSP users.

Alas, the days of Mac like immunity have passed for the DS. In much the same way as the PSP "patch" turned the machine into nothing more than a nicely stylish block (until someone asked you to turn it on) the DS trojan reduces it to a chunky piece of plastic you wouldn't even keep for looks anymore.

Hidden cleverly under cover as a Hentai viewer the nasty little bug has been downloaded to and destroyed DS users' consoles already. With no way found so far to restore an effected DS to a playable state the advice is just to sit tight and only download files from trustworthy sources. Much the same as with the PSP it looks like DS users will now have to be more careful with their downloads.

So, to DS users about who might be the sort to look for DS roms that masquerade as Hentai viewers you'd best be wary of what you do with them. Otherwise those few, and I sincerely hope it is only a few, who do end up in a mess seem to have no way to fix their DS' yet. At least, none that they've found anywhere reporting on the trojan here. Of course, if you use the FlashMe Firmware Replacement you can recover your DS by pressing A, B, Start and Select and loading from flashcard.

Whatever happens, it looks like someone's let the cat among the canaries with portable trojans this month. Hopefully we'll see a DS antivirus out soon, the PSP response was almost immediate, and the DS has been around much longer.
