MediaDefender source code leaked to wibble

An inside job, reportedly

RIAA LACKEY MediaDefender has been staggered yet again by its shadowy nemesis -- the hacker group that calls itself the "MediaDefender Defenders" -- this time by the release of software it uses to attack file sharing networks.

The same group earlier released MediaDefender's emails in the thousands, its tracking database, and even a phone call revealing its cunning plan to run a P2P file sharing honeypot site called MiiVi.

A file that was released along with MediaDefender's software source code said:

"The source is complete for their operations regarding Kazaa, bittorrent, gnutella etc. This system is now released for the public in order to identify the decoys they set up. A special thanks to the MD employee that gave this to us."

According to TorrentFreak, which broke the news today on its website, "This leak contains a wealth of information and [can] seriously harm MediaDefender's future operations. BitTorrent tracker owners and other admins who are involved in managing P2P networks can utilize the leaked information to brace themselves against companies like MediaDefender, who try to pollute their networks with fake files. From the leak it seems that MediaDefender is active on virtually every P2P network, including Usenet."

So far, MediaDefender hasn't either confirmed or denied that one of its employees leaked the files. It has announced that the FBI will be investigating.

A list of the leaked files is reproduced below, many with names that reveal their targets and hint at their purposes.

MediaDefender must have considered itself pretty smart for getting the RIAA to pay it to sabotage file sharing networks and sow disruption among P2P users. What it apparently didn't reckon on, however, were the likely consequences of ticking off a bunch of people much smarter and a lot more capable than its own technicians. ยต
