JON PEDDIE research has just published the latest edition of its Add-in Board report which contains some startling facts and figures.

According to the report, six different graphic chip companies offer a total of 129 versions of their chips in different segments.

It's no wonder that it's easy to get confused about what is exactly what. Just imagine how their partners feel.

The report said the 129 flavours consist of 18 value, 57 mainstream, 42 performance and 12 workstation boards with SKUs (stock keeping units) offered by Nvidia, ATI, 3D Labs, Matrox, S3-Via and XGI.

The same report said that by the end of this year there will be 496 million add in boards in service worldwide, all of which will be Direct X7 or above.

Jon Peddie regularly writes this and similarly interesting and informative stuff over at this site. µ
