Hellgate DX10 comparison shows smoke and mirrors

Pics show the virility of Vista
Monday, 8 October 2007, 13:18

AS IT WAS POINTED out by Theo, we are about to enter a new, delicious season of Christmas gaming, with Hellgate: London one of the top titles about to hit in November.

Well, that game might not be quite so headline as Crysis or Gears of War, but just like those bad boys, it has some DirectX 10 action going on. There are some funky new screenshots out this morning that show the comparison between DX9 and DX10 versions of the game.

There really isn't that much to show. DX10 adds better effects for smoke and lighting, although these are rather subtle. More noticeable is the 'very high' and 'extreme' shader settings, which add depth of field effects. The effect is slightly strange, and we can see gamers actually turning it off as overly distracting, but perhaps our cynical eyes are just too battered to hack it.

In any event, this appears to be yet another game where DX10 brings next-to-nothing to the table. Bread and cheese for Vista, once again. µ

Dull?

Those have to be the dullest screenshots of a new game I have ever seen.

The original unreal tournament my partner plays looks more impressive than that.

Correction

VE3D's images do not compare DX9 and DX10. They compare different shader settings using only DX10.

Please correct your erroneous article as it paints Hellgate: London in a bad light.

Recorrections

Well you can change the article to what Mr. Hellgate Guru says, but it doesn't change what those screenshots look like, or DX10 for that matter.

Re-recorrection

You don't need to read the article to get a negative opinion of this game, just watch some of the stupefyingly dull gameplay videos.

DX10 is just a advertisement to buy Vista

Only better smoke and better lightning

Meh...

All current games and the ones that come soon are DX9\DX10 hybrids

Which means they are DX9 games with support of some little DX10 features

Even Crysis is a DX9\DX10 hybrid and not a true DX10 game

DX10 is practically almost useless right now

It does not add nothing revolutionary or important to the table
and you do not really need it

DX9 is still fine
and

i am not going to miss some better looking smoke and lightning with Hellgate

plus DX10 is slower from DX9

Still sticking to XP

Who is surprised??

Every time a new directx comes out, people have to go about shouting how this game that runs on the newer version of DX but also can run on the previous version doesn't look any different.

Does not one person who bothers to write this stuff remember that it takes developers time to actually learn how to utilize the new Direct X, or the new new Shader models and all the other NEW stuff that Previously did not Exist???

Just take a look at a current gen console, say Xbox360 or PS3- their launch titles were both cool at the time, but in retrospect something released a year later takes much better advantage of the graphics capabilities of the console.

I don't own a PS3, so I can't cite a specific example, but Burnout; Revenge was a game on both original Xbox and 360. Not much difference in looks and was a early title for 360. Compare Revenge to Burnout: Paradise coming out in January and you can see quite a bit of difference, same 360 hardware, but given a year or two and the game looks much improved.

So please, just chill out on DX10. No need to rush out for Vista for gaming. They might even see the light and let us XP users have it, if you can just hold out a little bit longer.

@Scapes

No this article does not paint the game in bad light. It paints DX10 in bad light and, from what I've read on the comments pages on the linked site, I'm not the only one to be unimpressed by DX10.
So go back to your shell, marketroid, your intervention was uncalled for.

Is that what DX10 only can do ?

Are these screenshots DX10 ??

If DX10 is only capable for that then i am completely disappointed

I have seen better looking games based in DX9

Anyway i will play the game with Windows XP \ DX9

and i do not care for some little better looking smoke and light

DX10

You can blame Microsoft for completely over hyping DX10, it is pretty much the only reason to adopt Vista right now. Everything else about Microsoft’s latest bloatware operating system requires more resources for less performance than XP.

DX10 will bring superior visuals within games, in time. But Microsoft doesn’t have time, it wants to push Vista adoption ‘now’, so they completely blow it out of proportion and get peoples hopes unrealistically high for the time it has been out. What was the quoted improvement in performance? 10 times faster than DX9? We have all seen how that went…

Perhaps if Microsoft actually improves its operating system next time round, instead of simply locking it down for content protection, they can redeem themselves from the mess they made this time round. But seeing how another Inquirer article stated that Microsoft’s mistakes have had no impact on its market share, I somewhat doubt they will learn from them.

Pictures & Video do not do justice to this game

For those who say it looks like crap or gameplay looks dull. I would suggest waiting for final released product. This game is great & addictive just like the good old diablo days (not D2)
