Chandler gets makeover, government says

LOCAL NEWSPAPERS are reporting that chip giant Intel is to make a major investment in its Chandler, Arizona fab.

That news was leaked to The Arizona Republic by the government of Arizona in the shape of Janet Napolitano.

Intel built a $2 billion fab in Chandler a few years back but put much of the project on ice as it watched how the market developed.

Quoting the mayor of Chandler, the AR said the fab will soon fill with people, a plus for his city.

Chandler already makes Pentium IV chips and, we believe, flash memory, but it seems Intel is to convert the fab into a 12-inch (300 millimeter) facility during the course of this year.

Here's the Arizona Republic .

* NOW SEE ALSO this update, which says that Intel will spend $2 billion on the 12-inch technology.
