DOT UK DOMAIN NAME registry, Nominet said it has secured the aid of boffins at Oxford Brookes University to shield UK web users from abuse.

Nominet says the boffins will use their knowledge discovery and data mining expertise to develop algorithms and software tools that can help detect fraudulent use of the .uk national registry.

The partnership aims to help protect the 5.5 million UK domain names, registrant data and the UK Internet as a whole.

Jay Daley, Nominet's Director of IT said the organisation had developed, "sophisticated systems" to protect the .uk registry, but acknowledged there was more to do. "We need to make efforts to stay ahead of the abusers by developing increasingly complex systems.

He said the aim was to develop tools to, "guard against those who seek to disrupt operations, take commercial advantage of the system or steal information".

The partnership is being supported by the Department of Trade and Industry through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) award. It will see the creation of two new anti-abuse jobs. µ
