Lite-On builds Blu-ray drives for new Xbox - report

Lite on details
Tuesday, 1 April 2008, 10:25

MAKER OF DISC-SPINNERS Lite-On is building Blu-ray Disc-(BD) ROM drives for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console, according to Taiwan-based Digitimes' sources.

Lite-On currently builds DVD drives for the Volish box, but it looks like Microsoft will bite Sony's bullet and move up to Blu-ray, since it can't persuade anyone to make HD-DVD drives any more.

Lite-On will begin shipping drives to Microsoft in the latter half of this year, Digitimes' unverified sources said. They also said the firm has begun shipping the drives already so unless a poisson d'avril has swum under the drawbridge, someone's a bit confused.

The drives headed for Microsoft are for the next-generation Xbox, the 361. ยต

Nice but...

It can only be used for movies. You can't use it for games, without upsetting 17 million existing owners who only have DVD...

Thanks, but it's turning out more and more like Sony got it 100% right, and Microsoft's plan of rushing to market (without bothering to test the 360), has lost them this generation.

Spot the April Fools joke

It sounded quite convincing actually, until that Xbox 361 line at the end gave the game away.

What?

Assuming this is not an April 1st joke. I am referring to the previous poster.

First they didn't specify if it would be stand alone or not like the current HD DVD drive. Second, there is no technical reason you could not incorporate a built in Blu Ray drive and still use your current media.

Blu Ray is backwards compatible to DVD and you can alter the XBOX 360 to read Blu Ray, DVD and existing XBOX games.

Not a joke

Hey guys! The "Xbox361" is only The Inquirer's joke. Look at the original piece, there is no 361 there.

Btw,
"They also said the firm has begun shipping the drives already so unless a poisson d'avril has swam under the drawbridge, someone's a bit confused."

Yes, it's you. The original piece said:
"Lite-On has already started steady shipments of BD-ROM drives and BD burners, the sources added."
Well, do you think they're shipping BD burners for the Xbox360? Of course, they meant Lite-On is shipping several kinds of BD drives to the _industry_ already.
