Notebook sales surge ahead of desktops

Cheap and cheerful laptops winning out

A RANGE OF NEW low-cost ultra-portables with improved specs is lined up to hit the shelves in time for the back-to-school season.

With economic uncertainty postponing IT sales and affecting many business sectors it isn’t surprising that there is a demand for ‘basic’ or low-cost ultra-portables and a slowdown in desktop sales.

The notebook market is reported to have driven the market growth by 53 per cent year on year while desktops did marginally better than expected at 0.7 per cent despite global economic pressure and rising energy costs.

The demand for lower-priced, portable PCs is expected to rise as the school holiday season passes and Christmas approaches, remaining popular in both the education and business sectors. µ
