Friday, 11 February 2005, 08:41
TROLLTECH, Emuzed, and semiconductor giants Infineon and Samsung released what they said is the first UMTS/EDGE smartphone design using the Linux OS.

The reference design supports a number of 3G and multimedia services, including video calls, video streaming, support for MPEG4, and support for stereo loudspeakers.

The firms will show off a phone using Linux at the 3GSM show, which starts on Valentine's Day in Cannes.

The ref design includes Samsung's S3C24A0 application processor and camera module and an Infineon modem unit.

An Infineon executive claimed that market research has shown that Linux will grab a big share of the feature and smartphone market in the future. µ
