Hapless hacker jailed

Tried to nick cash from Red Cross
Monday, 14 July 2008, 07:21

A CHINESE HACKER has been jailed for two years after he broke into a Red Cross website and asked for earthquake relief donations to be sent to his bank account.

In what has to be one of the silliest attempts at stealing cash we have seen for some time, Litao Yang stole the site administrator's ID and password and used it to edit the site asking for donations to be deposited in his account

He stuck a virus onto the website and it was shut down for 27 hours while site administrators tried to get it back online.

All Inspector Knacker of the Jiangsu Yard had to do was find out who the bank account belonged too and they could finger Yang's collar. Yang was charged with fraud.

They did this all so quickly that the hapless hacker didn’t have time to syphon off a single donation, possibly because he managed to close the site down with his wonderful virus plan.

There was some concern that his actions might have prevented much needed cash getting to the Red Cross to help victims. µ

A disgrace

What a disgrace!
You wanna hack - fine.
You wanna have fun exploiting security holes and leaving your mark on sites without doing damage - fine.
You wanna grab free money via online fraud - not ok.
You wanna grab free money by hacking humanitarian sites - unacceptable!
Guys like this need a good bashing form the scene.
